What is a STEM?
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
I agreem, for sure.
But considering we use the term STEM in our description indicating it as a requirement for membership it still has certain implications. It suggests they didnt know the server is a STEM exclusive server and therefore are likely not in STEM themselves.
Of course, regardless if they happen to be in STEM and just didnt know the rule before hand but by happy coincidence it fits them all the same, then they would be welcome to stay.

Well if you think that not knowing one abbreviation is that wrong ... Its up to you, you're the mod. And I know what is this home server about but not knowing an abbreviation... Well whatever your call
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
No I wouldnt say all that. wasnt about to jump on you and ban you. But we do require you be a STEM professional or enthusiast to be here. since you didnt know the term STEM it suggests you either are not one or at the very least didnt read the rules before joining.
Now if your telling me you are a member of the STEM community regardless then your welcome to stay. but because you didnt know the abbreviation it suggests you might not be.

@freemo
I have read the rules and since I'm not native English speaker nor I am in some English institution I just didn't pick the abbreviation . I have read that this instance is for scholars... And... I hope that my knowledge is right and that means its for like... Students and people around academic things...
So thats why I have chosen this instance , just looked like I will find clever people, and since this is not so common thing amongst general public (mastodon) I thought I will find some geeks here too. And I thought that this would be fine start to mastodon.
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
Yes thats correct, then it sounds like you are in the right place :)
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
@freemo
Oh nice, I think I will remember the abbreviation after this misapprehension
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
Its not a big deal, we just have a hard time fairly identifying non-STEM users. Generally it comes from people identifying themselves openly as not being in the STEM community. So we try to keep an eye out for any indication a person may be here for the wrong reasons. But even then we dont usually enforce it unless the person straight out tells us they have no interest in STEM or explicitly anti-STEM in some way.
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
@freemo
I dont understand why people would be even anti learning... Things are so cool....
BTW what's the definition of STEM community? Is it just a label or is it some actual group or organisation?
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
Basically just people who work, teach, or study (including hobbies) in STEM topics.
Its so broad as to be hard to enforce.
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
@freemo
So if I am interested in maths, physics, and mainly computers I like in the STEM community? Would I be there even if I was just a computer programmer? Or is it the idea of learning/teaching?
@snow @arteteco @design_RG
@design_RG
Got it, thanks

@k11m1
Considering you do not know the answer to that question it implies you shouldnt have an account on this server. We require users know what STEM is and be a part of it to be here.
