@AdrianBowyer @pocket couldn't see any mention of this topic in the linked article, by the way? Was it in the embedded video?

@AdrianBowyer @pocket the concept of skipping 13 is so mindnumbingly ridiculous. As if the thirteenth floor is no longer the thirteenth floor just because you named it something else. I can just imagine the god of misfortune, disappointed at being outwitted yet again by these number skipping geniuses.

@Sustainable2050 assuming I'm understanding this graph:

Isn't it wildly disappointing that the current pledges actually aim for higher initial emissions than COP26? So the commitment is to do lots more theoretical work in the future, but for now only less than already planned and agreed on? 🤦‍♂️

@khird @trinsec nothing in Tusky either. I guess my workaround is to go to Preferences -> Other in the web UI and change my Posting language from there. It is set to "Automatically detect language", but I guess I can change that before I post if I want something specific.

How does it detect language, by the way? Does it user browser language, or device language?

@khird @trinsec no, it's not there. I know it is on some instances, but not on my qoto. Is there's a setting to enable it, maybe?

There’s been a lot of discussion about a rule we recently instituted regarding security testing on the infosec.exchange instance. I understand the value or pen testing as much or more than most people, and I’m fully cognizant that pen tests are happening all the time and I’m not getting the report. I get it. But there are now 28,000 people using this service to communicate. I know there are vulnerabilities waiting to be discovered. Finding blog post fodder by fuzzing instances that are already running hot due to explosive growth is not super helpful. But at the same time, I WANT that testing to happen.

As a result, I am going to set up two instances tomorrow that only federate with each other. This is where I’d prefer legitimate security testing be performed. I’ll also be using it as the QA environment to test new updates and settings prior to deploying to the production instance. I’ll moderate signups because I don’t want it accidentally becoming fediverse 2.0 in the ongoing rush for the doors at twitter, but will accept anyone who wants to join, with clear indications that it’s a sandbox and should not be considered safe.

Thanks for patience as we continue to find out way.

@vik it'll be interesting to see how well mastodon d deals with spam, fraud, unsolicited follows from scantily clad women, etc etc.

@trinsec yeah, I guess 🤷‍♂️😃 I was just trying to do it right, and didn't see how. Thanks for the info.

Is there some way to set my post language here on qoto? I post in Norwegian and English, and I'd like to set the language on each post.

How do algorithms decide what content you see online? Is there really no way to prevent the misuse of social media to spread disinformation and hate?

Online platforms must be transparent and accountable for what their algorithms decide to promote. It's time we make this happen.

Starting today, we're setting up a European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency in Sevilla, Spain. This is one of the many measures in our new #DigitalServicesAct.

Babe, wake up, a new #JWST image just dropped.

Light from the protostar L1527 escapes above and below an edge-on protoplanetary disk (the dark line at the center of the image), creating an hourglass shape. This illuminates the cavities carved as ejected material from the star collides with the surrounding, dusty nebula.

Dust scatters shorter wavelengths of light, so blue areas are where the dust is thinner and orange areas are where the dust is more dense.

As long as American bathroom stalls look like this, I have grave worries over what they think privacy means:

@trinsec Sorting by most favorited, most boosted, or most replied to in a timeframe (reddit style maybe) could be useful. FOMO is one thing, but I don't spend my days on here and would like to catch highlights after the fact.

@Sheril and when we realize the vertical axis isn't linear, we see how bad for the climate beef really is. #MeatlessMondays aren't enough.

I miss some features on mastodon to discover good toots. I'm not constantly on, so I miss interesting stuff that has happened while I was offline.

Perhaps this is the start of a slippery slope leading to algorithms, echo chambers, marketing, spam, pain and suffering. Or should it simply be the convention to boost rather than favourite posts? (I'm a noob, is it already? I see some people boost quite a lot.)

It appears a favourite is almost just a bookmark. Granted, a toot can show how many times it has been favorited, but it doesn't seem like federation manages to keep this number updated. And I don't see how to discover recent toots with many favourites.

This week, the world’s human #population is expected to reach 8B. About 109B people have lived and died. Each grain of sand represents 10M.
