I'm Kelly! I'm a 5th year Bioinformatics PhD candidate at UMich in Pat Schloss' lab, building open source tools & pipelines for microbiome research. I'm a big fan of #rstats #tidyverse #snakemake for reproducible science.

@neurobongo I think it's going to be essential. While I personally love figuring out how new sites work & it has been lots of fun to try to figure out e.g. why searching for some handles was failing, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority there :).

I've spent a lot of my career trying to make usable UIs, and I think there will be many people who will struggle with the onboarding. The two options I see are:

1) A smoothed-out interface for non-experts built on mastodon's code base and design choices, analogous to how Ubuntu has a UI, and you can choose to use the terminal or you can choose to click on things. I think you've pointed out some of the major issues for new users -- choosing a server, finding posts.
2) A separate system, but one that federates with Mastodon servers. Some servers could choose to block these more user-friendly servers if they want to.

I personally like communicating with people who may not be as good at figuring out the intricacies of websites, but are brilliant in other ways, so I'm really hoping this happens. I also hope it is not based on blockchain?? because, why?

My main worry right now is that the current moderation model may not be able to handle the large influx of users. But, Wikipedia seems to do a good job with this, despite being all volunteer-based.

I also want to say how much I appreciate the patience that the long-time users have had with this invasion. It says a lot that so many of us new users are welcomed.

PS some servers allow 65K character posts, eliminating the need for threads. What do you think about that option?

Hi! 👋

My husband of 13 years passed away unexpectedly last month.

My current company has not been supportive.

I’ve been in tech for 20+ years, with experience ranging from being one of the first admins on Wikipedia to launching an EV.

I’ve led software, data, and product organizations and teams.

I’d love to chat to learn more about what you’re working on.

RTs are 🙏.

#introduction

I am researcher working at the interface of artificial intelligence and neuroscience. I really wear two hats.

🎩 I work at Meta Reality Labs, thinking about neuromotor neural interfaces.

🤠 I am also an adjunct professor at Stanford, where I think about neural dynamics and how they give rise to computation and behavior.

Hi everyone, I am new here and learning the platform. By way of background, I am a chemical biologist and glycoscientist on the Stanford Chemistry faculty. Known for creating a field called #bioorthogonal chemistry (for which I shared the 2022 NP) and launching biotech companies with new therapeutic and diagnostic platforms, mostly rooted in glycobiology. Passionate about interdisciplinary science, diversity equity and inclusion in STEM, peanut butter, gyms and 70s funk.

It would perhaps help if you could please tell google that there is nothing deceptive about this website by going to this link:

The1st study to show improvement in long-term outcomes after Paxlovid—including less #LongCovid, deaths, hospitalizations & complications—is a major advance. I've reviewed it: erictopol.substack.com/p/paxlo

Despite their simple neural circuitry and lack of skeleton, tardigrades exhibit interleg coordination during walking that resembles the one of insects (more complex organisms).

Those bugs are amazing and would deserve a thread @tardigradopedia

@bertozzi everytime I see something about you post-Nobel prize, I'm so inspired to see a successful scientist who has interests and a life outside the lab. Thanks for being such an inspiration.

👋 My name is Carly. I work at the intersection of #Gaming, #datascience and #cybersecurity. I manage a team of engineers focused on security in #videogames (specifically #callofduty). I started my career as an analytical #chemist making $15/hour. I learned how to program (FORTRAN lol) in grad school while studying quantum dynamics before I switched to #python. I now apply #machinelearning to security problems in online gaming. Nice to meet you all! Look forward to chatting with you!

@deeMahishi @qoto.org @albertcardona oh I see! Yes, the "local" time-line is what you want to look at. I'm appreciating it because there's a mix of both academic, industry, citizen scientists & engineers to hear from, all enthusiastic about stem!

If you don’t know where some of the rules are written, check <yourserver>/about/more such as: qoto.org/about/more So far I have only seen sensible advice at such pages across multiple instances.

@deeMahishi @qoto.org I started by looking at the following lists of a few people. I've just been adding lots of people to follow. I just "boosted" your intro post, hopefully people will follow you and then you can follow back? You can search by hashtag with the search box, eg , . The only subject relevant servers I know are @drosophila.social for droso (mostly neurobio?), @sigmoid.social for ML, and @dair-community.social for AI ethics. At least the way I used Twitter, my feed was mainly just people I followed, so that's mostly what I'm doing here so far. @NicoleCRust, and @albertcardona seem to know better what's going on, maybe have some suggestions?

Hi Mastodon! Another migrating neurobiologist here - I’m a sensory neuroscience postdoc at Cornell University working on optimizing functional imaging of circuits using in awake, behaving mice.
Looking forward to the new chapter here!

Who am I, and why am I here? #introduction

I am a machine learning researcher, using tools from #Bayes, #stats, #optimization, #informationgeometry, #deeplearning, signal processing, etc.

I care deeply about people, their well-being, inclusion, diversity, equity, privacy, and justice.

I believe in slow and rigorous scientific process, to add value to existing knowledge, and improve positive impact on society.

I am here to learn about all of these.

Hi everyone. I’m Jess, a materials scientist working on next-generation optical and electronic devices. I spend all my free time trying to make science more inclusive. For the last four years I’ve spent every evening writing the Wikipedia biographies of scientists from historically excluded groups. I’m nearly at 1800!! #WomenInSTEM

@lzamparo Agree! I actually just read a few Asimov robot books, and while they had interesting ideas, the lack of relatable characters made it hard for me to enjoy. I do think about the tele-world in "The Naked Sun" when I think about pandemic life.
