For other Mastodon #newbies, here's a good short article with #tips on using #Mastodon: https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/08/what-is-mastodon/
Especially helpful: links to 3 tools to find the people you #follow on Twitter. I'm trying out Debirdify (https://pruvisto.org/debirdify/) and it seems to be working well!
Let’s try this again. Where you at #fediverse? Boosts welcome so we can get the best sample size.
Northern Europe in mid-November has *never* been this warm in recorded history.

A few tips for newcomers, as I have learned myself in the past week...
#AltText Descriptions: Please use them, many folks here depend upon them and have been using them for years before we all arrived.
#CamelCase: when you use hashtags, use Camel Case if you have more than one word: #WelcomeToMastodon is easier to read than #welcometomastodon - so do that. Use WAAAAY more hashtags than you are used to on Twitter. Mastodon is hashtag dependent.
#ContentWarning: If you are posting something that might even in the slightest trigger another person, use the Content Warning (CW) option that you can toggle on at the bottom of the toot window. It's polite here. People can choose how they want to view and interact. Use CW more than you are used to on Twitter.
#Diversity: a few people have commented, "lots of white men here!" Well, ok, but you can also find each other by using hashtags like #WomenInStem #BlackMastodon and many more including my favorites that I started up: #Desi and #MixedDesi (i.e. me). Start your own if you don't see yourself represented, so others can find you, too.
#DMs: are under the globe option in the toot window for privacy setting and they appear in your full list / feed of notifications (don't freak out at that).
#Donations: This is all run by volunteers. Make a donation. Click on the "about this server" at the bottom of your screen (might appear in a different location than on mine) and find out who is running your server and how to make a donation. And thank them!
#Introductions: Please write a friendly intro and use the hashtag #introduction so people can learn about you. Be interested in others. Grow your community through daily, friendly interaction.
Have fun! This is like a big global cafe with many tables to sit at, and conversations to be had.
Lots more tips linked in my feed. Welcome!
@freemo @trinsec @War_Kittens ah I see. Thanks for that information. Here’s hoping the good intentions of the instance can be upheld into any possible future we may find ourselves in.
@mikegalsworthy not to mention the state of their clothes after all those muddy puddles…
@freemo @trinsec @War_Kittens obviously, being so new, and cis, I don’t know the backstory here, but it’s very dismaying. Inclusivity must be fought for all the time, but shouldn’t have to be. 💪🏳️🌈
I have to say im a bit disgusted (not with you) that us taking a hard stance on protecting our members of the LGBTQ community from violence has been twisted and distorted, and blatantly lied about in an attempt to make us look bad.
When the vast majority of the fediverse were silencing the LGBTQ and they were migrating to us int he thousands I knew what we were doing was right... when those servers who lost their user base tried to distort and lie about the situation, evne as a minority, it hurt, but I did what was right anyway.
To actually see people years later buying those same lies when they are so easily debunked... that causes me to loose hope for humanity. You made no attempt to ask us about the situation or learn what the other side of the story was, talk about the features, understand why they arent privacy violating at all (they do not give you access to toots people dont give permission for you to see)... People need to do better, they need to fact check this nonsense rather than just get spoon fed and then repeat the disinformation again and repeat the nasty cycle.
@CapeBretonGent lovely thought from a son she must love a lot. My Mum will be 90 this month and is pretty much at the end of that journey. She used to drink this stuff called Camp coffee. Basically chicory essence, and shall we say an acquired taste!
@natasha4mp hello! Glad to see you here!
Quick reminder. If you see a blue tick in someone’s name? They added that themselves. It’s a cute sticker, not a verification.
Check someone’s profile to see if they have verified themselves using a bit of code on their website. https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-advanced-tips/#HowDoIVerifyMyAccount
If they have, the link will be green.
@CapeBretonGent hey Tom, mine’s a strong builder’s tea, milk and two 😊
#introduction Hello everyone. Thanks for providing everyone involved in #twittermigration a soft place to land. I strive to be a positive presence in the lives of those I interact with. If that comes to include you then, welcome aboard. I am a retired teacher, a proud Canadian, a family man, a blogger (mostly about music) and I love a hot cup of tea almost as much as I love my family. I look forward to becoming more skilled in how everything functions here. For now, this is me. I am here.
“...the debates that are going to take shape in the small corner of the internet known as the Fediverse are bound to either create something new and amazing or suffocate a promising baseline for change.” Inspiring helicopter view of the Fediverse migration.
Hi, I'm Tristan.
I've been bumping around the internet industry since the early 1990s. There is record of my being one of the earliest webmaster (among the first 30) when I was in college.
I'm a believer in technology's potential for good. I'm also a realist worried about its potential for not good.
I'm now running a startup helping #non-profit and #government agencies in #human-services
In my spare time, I love #reading #writing and thinking about building a #better-net
@TNLNYC hi Tristan. New here too. Interested in your non-profit government work. Do you mean like https://codeforamerica.org/ ? If so, I have a couple of domains like that I’m sitting on for my native UK and adopted Ireland. Looking for ideas how to progress.
My top advice for #twittermigration folks looking to build an audience on #mastodon:
👉 Show up! Fill out your profile (yes you can copy your bio from the bird app) and post a few starter toots with what to expect from you
👉 Hashtags are a great way to find users outside your community. Be specific to your interests too
👉 Engage. Reply to toots!! Go out of your way to find people with mutual interests. Build your bridges while it’s easy
👉 Come back tomorrow

Let’s say hi and interact with hashtag introduction toots!
