- you want me to shoot at that guy, laying on the floor with his body pressed against your living breathing wife's?
- yeah!... what? you think she...? naaah mahhn, her life's worthless now, if i knew dis gonna happen i would have Keyser Sozed her ass!
@digital_carver Inconsistency is the worst part, makes it hard to even report a bug. I preach the quirky Subway Tooter.
@Meeper @georgia Evolution is not an optimizing process, at least when it comes to the ability of the individual complex organisms. The species don't survive cause their members were the bestl, but cause they were barely good enough, or sometimes barely bad enough. Being very good at harvesting, means also being very good at depleting. This gives ample space or random wacky things to exist.
At R&D headquarters of evolution: OMG, the crab we made is just too freaking fast for its own ecosystem, what to we dooo, we can't change the entire design, the deadline is tomorrow!! ok, we just make the pincer huge.... we just make the pincer huge and it's not so fast anymore... ok, it's fine ship it!
@alex *copies the premise, copies the principle, copies the method, copies the purpose* I don't want to just copy, I'm going to change this.... emoji...
@digital_carver wait, this sounded too intriguing and fascinating... I meant this bad! ok? People actually design these things and they are exploiting our adaptivity, instead of reusing, improving and standardizing existing designs!
@digital_carver I'm going do answer these rhetorical questions!
State of the industry maybe? Nothing really comes with a manual, or nobody reads them anyway. You're supposed to just give it a try and figure it out. It's "intuitive", and it is what it is. A virtual natural habitat. And people do, and everyone comes up with their own interpretation of what things are, and we just end up with a bunch of esoteric cultural artifact.
@digital_carver it's a weird thing, as with many other things I would guess inherited from twitter and familiar to people who used it.
If you @ someone they will be notified, otherwise they will not be.
A reply is always part of the thread, but if you do not @ anyone it will also appear on your home and local timeline and on the follower's home timeline. Otherwise (replies with @) don't appear there. There might be settings for this and different backends work differently. I think Pleroma would show replies with @ to followers, because it shows those on local timeline.
I don't think the position of the @ matters, could be just a fedilab thing. Last time I tried it, it would indent to one level but not any deeper, so not being able to draw a proper tree it will show all the rest of the branches flat, so basically it show only the current branch with one level of indentation. Here again there can be difference between backends in the underlying structure of the thread.

In my eyes the issue is different. Your refrigerator or washing machine are not made to be easily customizable or fixable by you, they are preconfigured and likely pre-installed for you, and you happily adhere rather strictly to their usage manual. Crucially you also know, that if something were to go wrong, or some upgrade or fix was necessary, or even if you just need an advice, there is a free market of affordable local experts to choose from to help you (not to mention warranty). The proprietary software culture has made sure this free market does not exist, and even the few islands of FOSS that exist have to adhere by the standards set by it: No infrastructure, no quality standards, no competition, only marketing and pop culture.
Many people think that FOSS has been tried and didn't work, or didn't work well, but as long as most people accept proprietary software and its culture and consider FOSS just an alternative, you can't say it has been tried. It's still the same old battle. It's only natural that first you need to win over the niche expert markets and then move on to general public, but we haven't yet fully achieved even that.
@iron_bug sure, the pro gunners keep arguing how they need better stopping power and automatic weapons, and how non/less-lethal can't work, and you are here going "I'll have a chance to shoot back AFTER being shot".
Knowing that the victim has a gun will only stop a criminal that doesn't have a gun. Otherwise they have a clear advantage as the aggressor. They are not some robin hood who just steals and doesn't kill, they will shoot you without a second thought, just like they would have cut you even if you had a knife, which is even more dangerous for them. Guns only escalate this, so they will need to make absolutely sure you are dead, cause they can't run from a gun.
But no, of course, what am I saying, crime is just a hobby, people don't do it out of fear or desperation, they just do it for fun. A little bit of fear will stop them. Yesterday you were living in a gang war zone, and today you are saying all these terrible gangsters will turn into absolute pussies at a sight of gun.
TIL guns cure crime by merely existing.
@iron_bug you are not arguing my points you are just stating the opposite. Now form what you said I understand that I'm so unbelievably thick, that I'm not worth another second of your consideration, but in case others reading need some clarification, can you please enlighten me, how exactly is any gun going to protect you from getting shot by a criminal? I guess it's the fear, that after shooting you in the back of the head, you're going to turn around, draw a gun and shoot back at them 3 times. Or the terror, that if they drive by and riddle you with bullets, you are going to spin around, pull a rocket launcher out of your ass and blow them to smithereens.
@digital_carver all the rage against fedilab is out of envy. And also cause it crashes and I heard eats a lot of battery.
@iron_bug I never said there are not gang wars, I simply asked whether you are cruel enough or willing to be cruel enough to participate in them in any meaningful way when it comes to the power struggle. I asked if your peers are cruel enough or willing to be cruel enough, to maybe form the good gang, to fight the bad gangs, cause that's the equal fight. You gunning them all down like a rambo the second they pop up from random windows is not the equal fight, it's your power fantasy.
I'll happily buy you a gun myself, when you stop saying that it gives you power, as it gives power to the cruel. When you buy a car you don't think "oh yes, so much power to fight all the bad guys I hate".

there is more there to illustrate my point if you are interested.
re: logic question
@otini Come to think of it, if what you introduced is close enough to usual Boolean algebra, then since you can define xor as (X!Y v !XY), and derive all of it's properties, you can carry out all those derivations in place without the abstraction, but I imagine it's going to be an absolute nightmare.
