"I am Groot."

RT @CameraTrapSue@twitter.com

Asked by a Twitter friend to repost this timelapse of my sweet chocolate pepper plant moving at night.

I was surprised by how much all my plants moved at night, completely dark room (except for camera IR taking photos) no air flow from heaters etc to make it move involuntarily.

@krita wow, it's almost like Stallman was right all along, when he warned decades ago, that proprietary software can and will spy on its users.
And everyone were saying "that's crazy talk, why would anyone want to spy on MY stuff???".

If you work with #scRNAseq, you should have a look at tidyseurat github.com/stemangiola/tidyseu

It creates an invisible layer that enables viewing the Seurat object as a tidyverse tibble, and provides Seurat-compatible dplyr, tidyr, ggplot & plotly functions

It’s done! 365 days of recording the local temperature and weather in a knitted scarf.

I cannot keep this to myself. There is a website (radio.garden) where you can listen to radio stations all over the world for free. No log in. No email address. Nothing.

When the site loads, you are looking at the globe. Slide the little white circle over the green dots (each green dot is a radio station) until you find one you like.

I have been listening to this station in the Netherlands and it absolutely slaps. I have no idea what they're saying but the music is fantastic.

Happy to share our new article, which has been in the making for a veeery long time!

Ghrelin is a produced by the stomach, which induces hunger. In order to do so, ghrelin needs to enter the brain, to reach neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the , a region of the brain important for many responses.

Here, we explore the role of cells lining the capillaries (such as ) at the median eminence, which is on of the "doors" of the brain, where molecules from the periphery are allowed to get in.

We used a mouse model where pericytes can be electrically excited via to study the dynamics of ghrelin entrance in the brain. When we excited pericytes, there was a slow-down of blood flow at the median eminence, resulting in slower entrance of ghrelin, lower and delayed food intake in response to ghrelin injection.

This shows pericytes as a potential therapeutical target for metabolic diseases.

How did I miss this conference?

---
#NormConf is the tech conference about all the stuff that matters in data and machine learning, but doesn't get the spotlight.
---

Topics include:

- How small can I get that Docker container?
- What's the simplest possible thing that might work, and why didn't you try that first?
- Data ethics: the non-sexy parts

The good thing: all videos are available 🤓

The thing about #depression is it can take away all joy in life.
Things you once loved, whether it's art, projects, cooking/food, etc. It can sap you of motivation, take the fun out of activities, and really make things generally more difficult.

These can also be indicators that you're depressed.

If you like the idea of using #RStats {targets} 📦 for reproducible data analysis, updating only things that need to be updated, and keeping yourself organized; but have struggled how to use it within a data analysis, I have a blog post that might help you.

In the post, I show how I work through an example lipidomics analysis using {targets}, that should be generally applicable to many, many data analyses, even non-omics.

Twitter; abuse

Shout out to the pro-science folks here and on twitter who admonished me for leaving and told me (1) I was letting down the cause and (2) by leaving I was playing politics instead of doing science.

No. A bully runs that house, and I'm walking out the door. You have no right to tell anyone to stay with an abuser and put up with threats to their own safety.

Unless you've weathered three years of death threats for your public health advocacy, keep it to yourself.

Hi, first toot! I'm a scientist and secular humanist. I love reading (fantasy and sci-fi but anything really), clouds, timekeeping, moose, the 80s, and classic rock music. Causes include the planet, human trafficking, and US blue wave 🌊

Wow, this paper on #scRNAseq and differential expression methods is an eye opener. nature.com/articles/s41467-021

Nice overview of methods and relatively easy to understand explanation of what is wrong with certain, especially single-cell-specific, methods.

Of great help in my own scRNA-seq efforts. Should probably have read this earlier. Now, back to R I go. 😅
