@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org I assume it's because keeping posts in sync between instances is tricky.

I think this has always been a thing for likes (although, not so for boosts)

@Okanogen Quote posts are cool for a few reasons, including being able to share something more complex than just links and threads.

With a link, someone will often click on it and get transported to a whole other instance.

With a quote post, you can see a sneak peek (although, be mindful that it's easy to take that peek out of context) and click onto it from the same instance.

@Okanogen @hrefna That is admittedly an annoying one, although it's hard to say what the best solution here would be.

They probably don't want to end up replicating mainstream social media though by replicating recommendation engines and other engagement driven functionality.

@hrefna In my experience, "Nazi instances" (although, "troll instances" are) and "pro-CSAM instances" are not actually a thing.

There have been accusations, to be sure, however, every single time, they've never turned up an instance which is explicitly "pro-CSAM" (it's usually hyperbole).

So, I'm inclined to think it's a moderation matter. And even if you do about as well as mainstream social media, that's usually not satisfactory for the quite a few of these instances.

@PupCrowbar No, you cannot follow non-federated instances.

"1 in 3 people on the Internet are [minors]"
Considering there are billions of people on the Internet, it seems the amount of abuse is very small then.

@timorl @bonifartius @freemo It could be the U.K. one hastily came to a conclusion with insufficient context / information.

I'm going to avoid speculating broadly here though. Not enough information.

@freemo @timorl @bonifartius Apparently, the U.K. defamation case was against a newspaper, whereas the U.S. one was against her directly and involved far more evidence.

I've only heard of the case in passing though. I'm not familiar with it, so I might be mistaken.

@kkarhan @autonomysolidarity @eff Well, hopefully the bill can fall via one of these routes. That is the ideal.

But, yeah, you can probably do that.

The U.K. left the E.U. but not the ECHR (European Convention on Human Rights).

Their politicians threatened to a few times a couple of years ago (because they wanted to deport migrants to Rwanda where there were concerns they might be treated inhumanely).

However, their "reform proposals" were overwhelmingly unpopular. I think something like 90% of the populace disagreed with them in one poll.

@kkarhan @autonomysolidarity @eff The language in this one is so tortured that it's not clear it can pass judicial review (hopefully not).

The only other options would be to rely on the ECHR, or for them to repeal it.

@lucifargundam So, probably some middle aged guy who never interacts with the platform at all, or hardly, and just has some team of people put up content.

It goes without saying that it is not the place of any British Government to go asking platforms to remove particular people because they're apparently bad people for committing some crime (which doesn't even have anything to do with the platform).

"debate"

Interesting language to describe the government screaming at the top of their lungs at civil society.

Curiously, the groups in mainland Europe which are more in favor of chat control are either branches of foreign groups, or receive a lot of money from them.

Whereas, ones which are more local tend to be far more sceptical.

That is what I've seen at least.

@tripu @freemo Curiously, murder is also an issue which isn’t emotionally charged in politics in quite the same way.

I suppose I'll add that that BDSM (which I mentioned briefly) is still not going to be associated with crime per the studies.

If that is insufficiently clear.
