I read the rules to the critically acclaimed The Quiet Year and ... it seems extremely vague.

You're not supposed to use words on the map, but no particular alternative is provided. I know the game is supposed to be an exercise in working together when communication is limited, but what if player's aren't on the same page about what something on the map literally means?

Early in the book it says "we don't embody specific characters", but later you can discard a Contempt token "to act selfishly". What does that mean if you don't have a self?

There may be an amazing game / experience hiding in here, but I don't feel that the rulebook communicates it.

Up and at 'em, people! These whiteys aren't going to tighten themselves!

@chiasm I'll probably share materials here as it progresses.

Guest speakers are a distinct possibility.

Next fall, one of the undergraduate classes I'm teaching is Perspectives in Computer Science, a "CS 0" course for non-majors.

I plan to do it in Python and emphasize game development.

What's your favorite BEGINNER-FRIENDLY tool/library for developing games in Python?

Textbook suggestions also welcome.

A few times I have told the anecdote that the singly most baffling thing I ever saw in a code review — not the most insecure, just the most “how could a real programmer have written this? how could this ever make sense?” thing — was simply a C++ variable “number_of_trucks” … declared as float. Unambiguously referring to real physical trucks in a fleet.

Reader, it’s been over ten years and I am blowing the gods damn whistle. I had edited that story to protect the guilty: the variable was named number_of_planes. It was shipped by a company whose name begins with “B” and rhymes with “GOING out of business.”

02.05. Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West

Before we realized just how epic January's ice storm and power outage would become, we managed a very chilly play in the fading afternoon light. Even though I scored a personal best, @peterdrake still squeaked out the victory (73 vs 70).

Spoilers, both photo and alt text, can be found behind the Sensitive Content warning.

@LouisIngenthron I have not. The struggle is always between buying more books and reading the ones I have.

I approve of the LEGO ornithopter, but this woman looks like she's had a little too much spice, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

What happened to this plant and can it be saved?

(Due to a recent ice storm, it was subjected to a few days of near-freezing temperatures.)

@bradk I don't know much (and less about shaders). The funny thing is there isn't even a GameObject at that location, so I don't know what is failing to be shaded. Also, this doesn't happen when running the same WebGL build on a different OS.

Error messages in the browser console support your hypothesis, but I don't know what to do about them.

Note: Creation of internal variant of shader 'Hidden/PostProcessing/FinalPass' failed.

When I run a WebGL build of my Unity game on Ubuntu, I get a pink triangle in the middle of each level. This doesn't happen in the editor and it doesn't happen running the same WebGL build on other OSes. Any idea what's going on?

I beat a 2 dan! I (black) had five handicap stones and was very, very careful to hang onto my ever-shrinking lead until the game was over.
