I refuse to bow to the nihilism. I will not accept doom as an inevitability that cannot be averted. I see no point in it. I understand that some people are just out of energy and out of ability to hope or to help. That makes me feel that it’s even more important that while I have hope I hold onto it and express it so that others who still do know that they aren’t alone and we can get together and do what we can to keep the lights on and the darkness at bay.

Is it going to snow tonight in Portland, OR?

Doing the counting problems in chapter 2 of Ogawa & Davies's "The Endgame". I'm getting correct or close to it on most of them, but the thought of doing this under the time pressure of a game, remembering (without pencil and paper) the results of several local searches so I don't have to re-read them every turn, and still having the mental capacity to explore the main tree of play? *shudder*

Up and at 'em, people! These cards aren't going to punch themselves!

01.Campaign End. Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West

In the end, @peterdrake bested me in the overall campaign by only 66 points (1341 vs 1275) and 2 game victories (7 vs 5). Considering the length of the campaign and the variety of mechanisms, that struck us both as remarkably well-balanced.

02.12. Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West

The final game of our campaign was a tense nail-biter, but I wasn’t quite able to get past @peterdrake (117 vs 100).

Luck -- and maybe some skillful play -- but mostly luck -- brought me my highest score yet in a decisive victory over @peterdrake (150 vs 110).

@pluralistic @LouisIngenthron Okay, I'll look back over the thread more carefully and see if I can find the explanation of the images. Apologies for the waste of time.

In all sincerity, keep up the good work.

@pluralistic @LouisIngenthron Yes, I get that there are alternate ways to read your stuff. I usually read them directly on your blog after finding out about them on Mastodon.

My question is why every single post in the long thread gets an image. You have carefully thought out and explained your posting policy, but this seems inconsistent with it (specifically with using content warnings to reduce vertical feed space).

@pluralistic @LouisIngenthron "I only include images in my daily pinned post"

I'm confused, then. What am I seeing here?

@pluralistic @LouisIngenthron All fair enough, and the tip about expanding the content warnings for the whole thread with one click is handy.

Two quibbles:

Your statement that "Mastodon doesn’t have a search function" is now somewhat out of date, isn't it?

If a benefit of the long thread content warning is that it "reduces the amount of vertical space it takes up, and thus the number of other kinds of post it displaces", why include an image with each one? (I wondered if those images were automatically being pulled from pages you link to, but that doesn't appear to be the case.)

Look, when you're voting for a President you're not actually voting for just one guy. You're actually voting for every single member of their staff from the Vice President on down, the people who have the lunch pail type jobs who do the nuts and bolts daily grind work of holding our democracy together.

So forgive me if I think you a little naive for framing this as "one old guy vs another old guy". Remember that a vote for one of those "old guys" is also a vote re-affirming the first black female vice president in history plus a thousand other staff members that both she and Biden vetted between them.

And a vote for the other "old guy" comes along with about a hundred fucking traitors and moochers and grifters and seditionists and convicted fraudsters and rapists and literal white supremacists, most of whom are his own fucking family members.
