PSA for all y’all ‘Muricans out here:

We do not routinely re-attach blown up fingers and hands. Firework injuries are usually permanent. Now, there is some nuance here, so if you blow your hand up, seek care at an Emergency Room (not urgent care) immediately, but at the end of the day, most of the time your amputated part goes in the red bin, we bandage you up, and surgeon sees you next week to close up the hole.

Anyway, don’t be stupid.

KITTENS IN NEED OF HOME (PORTLAND, OR)

A student tells me:

--
My partner and I found these stray kittens on the corner of SW Terwilliger and SW Barbur Blvd. We named them Cereal (white/grey) and Concrete (grey). Attached are a few pictures of the pair!

We are currently trying to find them a forever home! Both kittens are about 8 weeks old. From a vet trip we learned that Cereal is a girl and Concrete is a boy. Cereal is very adventurous/curious. Concrete is super affectionate and will crawl into your lap for a nap. According to the vet, they're perfectly fine to be separated from each other.

When folks argue that a Universal Basic Income would deter working, think about those million-dollar CEOs. If a modest $15k is enough to make one quit working, wouldn’t multi-million dollar packages make CEOs practically comatose? Yet, here they are, still CEOing. Weird isn't it?

@glassbottommeg @sinbad You would say such a thing on our holiday? These are the values upon which our nation is founded! youtube.com/watch?v=JYqfVE-fyk

People use the "square cube law" to feel like there can't possibly be giant ants... but they just ignore all the giant crabs the size of army duffle bags.

The barriers to huge ants are not as robust as you think, and they can be overcome!

@col000r @aeva Long ago I saw a talk on different bases for number systems. Too low and your numbers get too long; too high and you have too many different glyphs to keep track of. The speaker concluded that base e would be ideal, but since you have to pick an integer, ternary is best.

Solution

@driscollis Even more bizarrely, x is not y works. How are == and `is` not syntactically interchangeable?!

Solution

@driscollis I ran it and was surprised by the error. Why does this fail, but x == (not y) works, as does not x == y? Operator precedence? is `not` not simply a unary operator? Is there something that becomes possible in Python that wouldn't work the C/Java way?

Where do I fight this encroaching fascism. Where do I start? All the usual political activities seem so inadequate- voting, GOTV, donating, talking to people, registering voters, etc etc- it all seems rather quaint now. Take to the streets? Never seems to work. Organize when our party would rather go after its own members than trump? Everything is broken. Someone send me a roadmap.

The first cohort of the American Climate Corps has been sworn in. 9,000 people will be deployed in the coming weeks to restore landscapes, erect solar panels, and work on environmental projects across America. #ShareGoodNewsToo fixthenews.com/r/224197e8?m=d6
