Here's the stuff I contributed to #KDE this February! Including work on the new Gamepad KCM, kdevelop.org, figuring out API documentation, and of course a slew of Tokodon features and fixes!

@VikingKong

So basically like in many countries that enforce Copyright by blocking sites like SciHub, LibGen and torrent search engines through DNS but still allow companies like NordVPN that offer an easy way to get around the block?

@VikingKong

It's not about spying on an ordinary citizen, it's about being able to retrieve data on anyone when needed for whatever reason.

I don't see how a company, foreign or not, could operate in a country by offering a way to overcome a measure by the governament: don't you think the Russian govermament would be more than capable and willing to block these so called VPN providers if their service were genuine?

Also notice that private companies collaborating with many governaments all around the world is not uncommon at all, see for example the Pegasus trojan: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pegasus_

@VikingKong

I understood that part, what I am asking is: aren't collecting data and blocking sites orthogonal? Or are you suggesting they discover inconvenient sites by tracking users and then proceed to block them through DNS?

@VikingKong

Wait a moment, what do you exactly mean by Internet censorship? I am not seeing how you are linking it to collecting data/tracking/spying people.

@MediaActivist

How do you know VPN providers like NordVPN are just not part of a new effort by NSA/GCHQ/whatever to collect data, even from people in nations not willing to collaborate and whose ISPs would then be better?

These so called VPN services are suspiciously too much promoted lately and they are also dangerous for the induced false sense of security.

For sure using the acronym "VPN" for this kind of services is already too scammy to me.

A real VPN is a network you usually find in companies and whose employees connect to to access content and devices not exposed to the Internet.

These "VPN" providers like NordVPN are using this same technology to make their users connect to their network, but then it is connected to the Internet and so are their users. So basically they act as a man-in-the-middle.

@MediaActivist @big_louse

Not Tor browser, you can have Tor running as a service on your machine. Depending on the OS there are different ways to make your traffic go through it, for example on Android just install and run Orbot, it will fake a local VPN and all your apps will use that.

In general you can use everything with Tor except torrents and you need some extra measures to be safe.

Using a VPN doesn't help AT ALL, so called VPN are nothing to do with being "private". The VPN acronym refers to the technology used to provide their service.

But so called VPNs are just virtual ISPs.

@macfranc @Shamar

Primer AI.

In 2020, Primer AI became a contractor for U.S. Special Operations Command.

Primer AI claims it will develop the first AI platform to automatically identity suspected disinformation agents.

Sean Gourley, the founder, worked for the U.S. military creating AI systems to "track insurgency" in post invasion Iraq.
His focus is now on "domestic disinformation", so citizens of western countries. Sean Gourley asserts they must be a "Manhattan Project for truth". He suggests governments should create centralized, government controled, Wikipedia style databases, which will be updated by intelligence agencies to create baselines of truth.
Gourley claims that 2020 is the year that begins the "weaponization of the truth"

The trolley problem: your imagination versus the even sadder reality. (Just got this from a friend who also collects trolley problem variants.)

@plenartowicz @freemo

Please no, let people follow who they want. On most instances other than Qoto you can't follow specific people on liberal instances because of this defederation bullyism.

Just stand on the shoulders of giants and read liberal thinkers of the 1600/1700 like Voltaire.

I think the fediverse really needs to hear this:

Hate the sin.
Love the sinner.

@freemo @rbreich

This was extensively discussed in Marx's Das Kapital and even the two thousand years old Bible has monitions on this.

In particular, separation of powers principle has its roots in Plato and was discussed by Locke and Montesquieu.

But to the legislature, executive, a judiciary powers you need to add at least the informative (already known as the fourth power), the economic and the technological ones.

@freemo @rbreich

The problem is not that the politicians can be bought but that enough economic power is political power and today it is mainly carried out through the financing, and therefore the control, of the mass media. Not only news but also movies, books, TV series, shows and so on.

And when I say political I don't mean only parties, elections etc. For example medical research being privately funded will only develop profitable products, such as drugs that chronicize a disease and the development of those that cure permanently are discouraged.

Same with other scientific fields like the economic one, funding the absurd doctrines like the NeoClassical one while burying Keynes.

Not to mention cultural impoverishment, the promotion of ideologies such as social Darwinism, individualism, materialism, nihilism, positivism, scientism: all functional to the preservation of power and the control of the masses.

@freemo @rbreich

Enough economic power means political power and that power is used to preserve the exploitation that enabled accumulation of economic power in the first place.
