"Microsoft Edge sends a request to bingapis .com with the full URL of nearly every page you navigate to"

Microsoft secretly tracks people across myriads of websites/apps via pixel. Now it was caught tracking them directly in the browser, by default. Wild.

To be fair Nostr is innovative when it comes to using servers only as relays to prevent the moderation drama that is fragmenting the Fediverse now

P.S. missing so much Diaspora's ability to publish posts for lists of accounts. Mastodon's everything-is-public is just stupid

Now is even going to have ChatGPT in the sidebar and conversation saved in /chats in your graph folder.

Logseq has made a fool of us privacy-conscious people.

I will no longer support it financially and I won't recommend it anymore.

If someone will maintain a patched version that is fully FOSS and without built-in OpenAI services (kinda like Bromite with Chrome) on both FlatHub and F-droid repos can have 5$/month from me and hopefully from other privacy-conscious enthusiasts.

Google has just updated its 2FA Authenticator app and added a much-needed feature: the ability to sync secrets across devices.

TL;DR: Don't turn it on.

The new update allows users to sign in with their Google Account and sync 2FA secrets across their iOS and Android devices.

We analyzed the network traffic when the app syncs the secrets, and it turns out the traffic is not end-to-end encrypted. As shown in the screenshots, this means that Google can see the secrets, likely even while they’re stored on their servers. There is no option to add a passphrase to protect the secrets, to make them accessible only by the user.

Why is this bad?

Every 2FA QR code contains a secret, or a seed, that’s used to generate the one-time codes. If someone else knows the secret, they can generate the same one-time codes and defeat 2FA protections. So, if there’s ever a data breach or if someone obtains access ....

Does someone know if it still needs to restart to apply the change? If yes will it works with Electron apps once updated too?

At the moment some Electron apps respect the setting but need to be restarted to apply a light/dark switch.

That was people fault for not using XMPP more to interact with people on Facebook¹. If GMail could do the same it would, but it can't because too many people use other email providers.

We just need to continue to use FOSS AP servers and if Meta & Co drop AP support at some point, well it will be bad for their users only, not for us.

1: I did my part at the time by chatting with Facebook users with a XMPP client on my Nokia 6630, incredibly at that time there was any other way to chat from mobile on Facebook.

Meta aka Instagram is working on a Twitter competitor that is rumored to be ActivityPub compatible.

If you run a fediverse instance (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Calckey and others), would you ban a Meta instance?

Boosts appreciated 👍 #fediverse #barcelona #activityPub #meta

@aral

I have no doubts about Meta's intentions but what about blocking GMail?

No email provider prevents you from interacting with GMail users, of course. But at least GMail being based on SMTP let us use our own email provider (to some extent, GMail sometimes blocks hobbist servers) with both GMail and non-GMail contacts.

If a person on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter notices that they can move to a FOSS instance without loosing their contacts maybe they will do so, reducing the data Meta & Co can gather (like what you are looking at while scrolling timelines).

This is why I think Meta & Co will never adopt ActivityPub, because they would make it too easy for people to move away.

Atomicpoet is a wannabe-Musk here with a big mouth and I wouldn't give him much importance in the context of the Fediverse.

Many people here never liked Gargron (founder of Mastodon) for some of his design decisions and for me a big issue Mastodon introduced is this fragmentation by blocking instances. Gargron/Mastodon hysterical approach to "moderation" is not inherently from the Fediverse. Keep in mind that the Fediverse exists since ~2008 and Mastodon in 2016 just introduced modern UI/UX and a focus on moderarion tools.

For me the issue is not the technology nor how social media are designed, it's with the people and no technology can fix them. Instead social media are just making them worse.

@Secunergy

A little country like Cuba survived severe sanctions for decades and Russian economy is going better since the sanctions, the increased prices of fossil fuels due to sactions benefited them, and it was predictable.

Instead US no longer have the industrial capacity of the past, they have not improved infrastructures for decades, they have recently made up for the lack of fossil fuels with the highly dangerous practice for the environment called fracking.

US is not in a position to impose sanctions to a country like Russia that have resources and is part of BRICS together with China and India, two of the largest emerging economies in the world.

The failure of US banks is also a consequence of the sanctions on Russia.

If you want a rationale for such irrational behavior by US, to me it is hysteria due to the inevitable loss of dominance over the rest of the world and the birth of a multipolar order.

The result is just acceleration of an inevitable process.

Now you can already "teach" a DSL to a chatbot easily and I imagine in the future we will just feed them with the whole documentation of languages/frameworks/tools without the need of codebases

Were you able to reproduce queries that look at "block-path" (the parent blocks used to tag many blocks at once, like in Logseq changelog)?

Switching back from #obsidian and #logseq to #emacs and #orgmode (+#orgroam) feels like a step from someone else's home into a thriving forest: such a rich eco-system! Found #systemcrafters an invaluable resource to get quickly from vanilla emacs to something which exceeds or is on par with the alternatives in all aspects that matter: configurability, extendability, control, speed, resources, android support via #orgzly, themes, #foss, local first, future proof,....
