Climate change drives bigger, wetter storms, like Florence

Hurricane Florence — large, slow and full of moisture — is threatening to inundate the Southeast. It's a type of storm that's getting more likely to form.

@freemo Oh of course, that's what I meant by "relative outputs", which we'd measure with kWh; comprehensive energy plan options would account for and weigh populations exposed to working conditions and pollution for both solar industry (and its chain, mining through manufacture) risks and nuclear industry (and its chain, mining through decomission) risks.

I was just commenting on the nuclear energy investment's unique risks from increasing environmental radioactivity (the "unsafe distance").

@freemo This had me thinking about the differences between solar and nuclear energy as investment options for nations/states.

On top of their relative outputs and features, both do have health risks from each's industrial working conditions and pollution, but uniquely for nuclear: contamination, accidents/disasters, and aggressive global posturing. We receive the sun's impacts on human and environmental health regardless, so the solar investment comparatively only manifests risks from industry.

The amount of premature deaths caused by long exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter in the atmosphere is larger than expected: 8.9 million in 2015.

@bigkafka Please excuse my brevity, I was staying in character limits!

"Thermal neutron energy" (0.025 electronvolts) relates to a certain speed; neutron speed is inversely related to its likelihood of hitting a target, my sample.

A neutron moderator is a material upon which "fast neutrons" impact until the neutrons are room-temperature: the speed from colliding with thermal nuclei. Indeed the moderator will heat up, but the beam continues through the other side with just thermal neutrons.

My research involves quantifying trace, toxic, particulate matter with neutron activation analysis. This is the neutron generator I use to irradiate air sampled filters, which are then analyzed by gamma spectroscopy.

Deuterium gas feeds into the magnetron on the left, which is ionized into plasma. The plasma strikes a deuterium film target in the chamber on the right, producing helium and a neutron beam. Aluminum then moderates the beam to thermal energy.

These have been a favourite thing of mine to paint for years! I find something about lines very aesthetically pleasing, and painting them is incredibly soothing. #art #artists #painting

@freemo Thank you for the warm welcome, it looks like this instance has been growing pretty rapidly lately. I can't wait to dive into some discussions around here!

I definitely plan to share some of the data I've been collecting. Much of my recent work involves irradiating air samples with neutrons (neutron activation), then detecting the sample's resulting gamma radioactivity on a spectrum to get a measure of trace quantities. I could upload some gamma spectra soon to show what I mean here! :)

Hello everyone, I'm excited to try out Mastodon! It may take me some time to warm up but I would like to get in the habit of posting regularly.

I am a physics phd student researching dust transport kinetics to create better dose predictions of radioactive release exposures. I also teach college physics in a variety of settings (classroom/lab, studio, online). I'm driven by the scientific method and improving the health and understanding of our society. Feel free to chat!
