This year was very hard for me in many aspects. I learned the importance of work-life balance and the value of rest. So if I don’t accept your speaker invitation or paper submissions or random foreign grant review (especially the latter!) well, such is life.

I want to focus on creative science in 2023, which is why I joined academia in the first place.

I will keep my quixotic crusade against bureacracy. Every zoom call avoided is a good outcome.

@Aquageo Definitely Zotero; lots of cool plugins for managing citations and notes.
My favorites are better bibtex and better notes, these help me a lot in my personal workflow.

@kabrams@union.place They deserve respect just for coming up with such a name

Using python quite a bit lately, this stuff is getting large and eventually I decided to bring some structure to it and design some classes to make it more manageable.
It's horrible, objects in python really suck; I feel this will eventually create more problems than it solves.

I'm seriously thinking about switching to Julia; do you know if that can be used to handle this kinds of things?
I doubt I wish to go the C++ way, I'm a single person and my main occupation is not software development.
Java could be I guess, but I'm afraid library support for the kind of stuff I'm doing could be quite poor...
I mean, frankly at this point even Fortran04 appears more appealing than python 😂

@welshpixie I agree with this line of conduct: I prefer silencing to blocking even though this might get me into contact with fascist people.
I mean, I often meet fascists IRL, I don't see why I should run away from them here.
Moreover, frankly, I've met very few fascists here and they were never harassing; I believe the problem of fascists on the fediverse to be a little exaggerated; unless you really go searching for them.

@NoTwit @QasimRashid
This looks extremely strange to me, how can you just make up a social security number? When you go to pay taxes it would be clear such number is not associated with anyone.
I guess you may impersonate someone else who is American, in that case you'd use his SSN and pay taxes for him; this only works unless that guy decides to start working and in this case taxes are not forfeit as that guy will receive social security benefits. Taxes will be forfeit if this American is dead but his death was not declared; but I can't believe this is very common.

What I don't understand is why would they go through all these complications to pay taxes, you could just work illegally at that point and pay no taxes. I guess the only point for paying taxes is getting a job with a contract; but that's pretty much useless to you since the contract would be invalid. I guess you'd only do this if you cannot find a job without a contract or if jobs with the contract pay considerably more.

Sure, they'll be paying VAT, but that's not really what we think about when we're talking about taxes.

What I'm asking to @QasimRashid is basically this: I know nothing about these things but something seems off.
How do you know these things and how does it make sense?

@QasimRashid Not that I really care about any of this, but your third point doesn't really make sense, nor prove anything.
A bunch of people together pay more taxes than one man... either you provide an income comparison or that single information is pretty much meaningless.

Frankly I'm a bit confused: I'm not American so I really don't know how this works.
How can undocumented immigrants pay taxes? I would imagine that since they have no documents they would not be allowed to pay taxes to the government.
Are you referring to VAT or is it actually possible for people that are not allowed to be there to pay taxes? Why would they even pay the taxes?

Cos'hanno in comune un agnostico Italiano ed un Cattolico Gambiano?
Molte cose, ma soprattutto che a Natale cucinano abbastanza da sfamare un paese ed ora dannazione abbiamo il frigo pieno di roba da far fuori...

@tlalexander This is basically what most northern Italians used to eat for most of their lives in the past.
