let my ivory subscription lapse to see if i could get used to using ice cubes all the time. made ice cubes feel quite a bit better by tweaking settings, but something just feels right about ivory that i miss! not sure it feels $20 good though. trying to pinpoint what the things are in ice cubes that make its UX inferior, but it does. the icon set and typographical things are part of it, i think.

anyone else get what i’m talking about?

milestone reached: son rans busted through his first snare head (whiplash-style). luckily we live around the corner from a music shop, so we were able to walk over and grab another (more minimalist?) remo powerstroke between snow squalls

as for the power supply, i ordered the weird 4 pin plug for it off mouser and a bench power supply capable of providing the 28v needed. if those successfully power up the unit, i can look into a more permanent arrangement. fingers crossed!

hoping maybe the snapped display base can be repaired with epoxy? if that’s not strong enough i guess someone in california still sells these bases for ~$200 (woof)

going to see if i can get my dad’s old G4 cube + CRT studio display working. has a burned out power supply (he thinks) and one of the monitor’s stand supports is snapped.

@freemo oh for sure — i’m not discontented at all. i just have an inkling of how much effort can be involved in this stuff and so wanted to express my appreciation 🙂

@mike @levisan one cool thing about ice cubes is that you can subscribe to other local timelines besides just your own. seemed like they brought in quote-posts earlier than others too — development is very active. UI doesn’t feel quite as polished as ivory though, but it’s getting better

i’m at the end of knife of dreams if anyone’s curious. that’s the one where mat fulfills prophecy by marrying a girl he barely knows

re-reading the wheel of time book series, and robert jordan sure mentions women reacting to things by “smoothing their skirts” a lot. i’m not sure i’ve ever seen a woman do this in real life

but maybe that’s why the genre for these books is “fantasy”

@pablor @pbump personally i’d never vote for either of these guys (they were even both my initial last choice in both of their primaries), but thankfully i don’t have to

@pablor @pbump far as i can tell, a lot of folks view the choice as between two evils, and see biden as racist as well, so don’t see that as the deciding factor. my guess is if you were able do psych evals of all trump supporters’ levels of racism, you wouldn’t get back the universal results you’re projecting
