I have a basic etiquette question that I haven't been able to find an answer to. My apology for any redundancy.

As an AI artist, which I know is a bit controversial itself, I do like to share pieces I've created. I've been doing this on instagram (instagram.com/shadowsonawall/ if content would affect the answer) and wonder if sharing here might not be the better long-term option.

The question then: is it rude to use the server's hard drive space for my art? Is there a limit of images that is considered polite/tolerable? Is this a bad idea from the outset?

@shadowsonawall You can do that, but Pixelfed is generally more tailored to this kind of use case. It's still on the Fediverse, so Mastodon users can boost and like your images.

@khird ooo, that does look like the right option. Crazy to me that I'd never stumbled on all of this before. Thank you!

@shadowsonawall

Just for clarity, you are a actual person who uses AI to create art, not an AI who creates art and posts it to Mastodon? (Not that it matters, sentient AIs are welcome, qoto is an inclusive instance)

Re posting frequency, that's up to you, but if it's too much they may get blocked. I think once a day wouldn't be much, but that's just me though.

@shadowsonawall An excellent question! I've just been spamming mine all over the place :) with the occasional "let me know if these are spammy" plea. This Pixelfed thing looks interesting!

@apinae

We dont have any explicit rules on this. Since its AI generated I suppose it really just comes down to the rate you set it at, and if the posts are automated or not... also if you monitor your account..

Is your plan to host a regular account, be active, make regular posts, talk to people, and just occasionally throw in some AI art, or do you want to just automatically post AI art and nothing else automatically and not really be active in the community much?

All of these options are potentially workable but it effects if you can post unlisted or listed is all.

@shadowsonawall

@freemo @apinae
some questions I probably should have thought to answer on my own, lol.

Instagram is more or less a storage mechanism, at least in my experience. Nice to have a backup that's easy to go through but zero human interaction. I get it, but it's not very rewarding. My thought was, perhaps I've found a place where I could share art and have quality conversations.

In terms of a balance between the two, the majority of conversations would likely be replies to other people with the majority of my original posts being art.

I have no intention of automating either but, when I get lucky with a clear afternoon all to my art, I can average a good two or three an hour for 3/4 hours.

@shadowsonawall I think youll be fine here.. if there is a problem dont worry we will talk it out. Just be remotely reasonable and we are good.

@freemo that is the kind of low expectation I can achieve 😆

@freemo @apinae @shadowsonawall

To (I hope!) clarify, these aren't automatically-generated, they're just made by people using AI tools, like other digital art is made by people using the GIMP. So I wouldn't expect the rate to be any higher at most than, say, someone posting the photos they take on their morning and evening walks every day or whatever.

@shadowsonawall As an instance admin, I think I'd probably encourage you to primarily make sure the file size is reasonable. Uploading 8k res images feels a tad much and will fill up disk space / cost a lot to store!

If you were to delete the toots after a time then I don't think it would be unreasonable to share some if you keep an eye on the number. There are more image focused ActivityPub (fediverse) apps though which may be a better experience for you.

@shadowsonawall @ceoln

I would be very interested in any answers to this question. I have posted a number of #aiart pieces either to spread good cheer or to illustrate a point about the climate emergency.

@ceeverywhere @ceoln I've learned that will depend on your server's rules. I've received answers about several different servers now (which is awesome, thank you everybody!) so I can take an educated guess about yours.

if the purpose of your art was to trigger a conversation, everybody seems to be good with that. On the other hand, if you are just trying to self-promote, or aren't engaging in any other way, you should definitely check with your server admins - no consensus on that. Sounds like you fall much closer to the former though so I wouldn't worry too much :blobsmile:

@shadowsonawall @ceeverywhere Thanks! I'm pretty much just "haha look at this thing I made!"; but if anyone wants to interact about it in any way, I'm overjoyed to.

I started a PixelFed account, too ( pixelfed.social/ceoln maybe) so I'll play with that also.

@shadowsonawall Pixelfed is a federated equivalent to Instagram. pixelfed.social is one instance you might like to check out. e.g. pixelfed.social/rimu

It's all on the same network so people using mastodon can follow your pixelfed posts from within Mastodon, in theory. Although I'm not sure how often that happens in practice because the UI to follow someone is a bit weird: you put their URL into the mastodon search box...

@shadowsonawall ,Consider JOINING #PIXELFED @pixelfed ,MANY OVERLAPPING SERVERS TOO , & AUTOMATIC LINKS TO: #MASTODON / @Mastodon ,TOO :)

Also Consider Adding/Running/Owning , Your Own/Shared/Funded Donations Servers/Instances Too & Helping #Mastodon & #Fediverse OVERLAPPING Several Servers/Instances To Too :) 😀
