It's seriously inconvenient that the middle mouse button seems broken. You don't realize how often you actually use it until you can't do it anymore.
@trinsec I experience this when working on laptops, thus CTRL+CLICK for the win
@barefootstache Yeah, that's what I've been doing the past few days. But if you want to be lazy and go mouse-only, that's pretty inconvenient. Plus it won't work in a few games either.
@trinsec I've found that setup especially difficult for Rimworld. Panning effortlessly with the middle mouse button is essential.
@LouisIngenthron In RimWorld I do use the keyboard for panning. So that's a non issue there. 😅
@trinsec Oh that's right, WASD wasn't a difficult adjustment, but the zooming was. It's like ctrl + mouse move or something? Way better with a scrollwheel.
@LouisIngenthron The scroll wheel works perfectly fine, thankfully. It's just that I can't use it as a button anymore.
@trinsec I've never had a middle button. What is it for?
@tonwood It usually does the job of a ctrl+click. In my case it'd be easily opening a link in a new tab, and I use that a lot.
In games it has various purposes. The most common one being able to pan in a map.
You sure you don't have a middle button? Usually there's a scroll wheel, and you can use it as a button too by pressing on it.
@trinsec my Logitech Marble Mouse (trackball) has left/right buttons plus two tiny ones whose function(s) I have never learned; possibly in MacOS they do nothing.
@tonwood I think I have that one in my tech closet. I really hate devices without scroll wheels. I have the M570 myself, also a trackball.
The two tiny buttons, I'm going to wage a guess they might be backward/forward buttons? The M570 has 2 seperate small buttons with that functionality.
Oh wait, the Arch Linux manual says about this Marble one that the small buttons are enabling scroll wheel functionality. Might be worth looking into that, heh.
@trinsec Ah, they do indeed work as forward/back in browser.
Mm, 2 Windows updates later and it seems fixed. At least, I can use it again.
