🔬 Some notable exceptions to that global trend:
In the 🇺🇸 #USA, the influence of income has vanished, and support depends solely (and strongly!) on education (highly educated ↔ leftist).
In #Scandinavia (epitome: 🇸🇪 #Sweden) it’s the opposite: education became irrelevant, and political preference depends only on income (perhaps because they are wealthy, egalitarian countries?).
🇵🇹 #Portugal hasn’t changed like the other countries: there the Right is still supported mostly by educated (and rich) voters. (NB: in the 50’s and 60’s, Portugal was a dictatorship).
🇮🇹 #Italy is the rare case where leftist parties ended up being the parties of the richest segment of the population. I wouldn’t read too much into this, though, as the political landscape there during the last decade or two has been a populist mess.
🇪🇸 #Spain is the country where education and income tell you the least about political preferences! There’s still the secular correlation “high income ↔ right wing”, but it’s very weak today. (NB: in the 50’s and 60’s, Spain was also a dictatorship).
🌐 Globally:
Half a century ago, the Left appealed mostly to the poor and uneducated, and the Right to the rich and educated.
Nowadays, supporting leftist parties still correlates with lower income (and supporting the Right with higher income), although that link has weakened.
What’s most interesting is that correlation along the “education” axis has reversed: today, it is mostly educated people supporting the Left, and uneducated people supporting the Right.

When I was younger, I thought that the defining distinction between #theLeft and #theRight was solidarity — as in, the former necessarily has to have way more of it than the latter.
Gradually I came to realise that characterisation is problematic for three reasons:
- #Leftists want to impose #solidarity, which is an oxymoron (by definition, you can’t mandate voluntary inclinations, such as affection or desire, on people).
- In practice, and at least in my own country (#Spain), the Left has become pro-independence and sympathetic towards secessionists (but more solidarity would require larger unions, stronger federations — not the richest regions going their own way).
- Sometimes the Right puts in practice more solidarity towards certain groups or causes (eg, non-elites, non-conformists, disadvantaged people who reject the orthodoxy) than the Left itself.
I now think that the ratio personal freedom vs economic freedom better categorises Left vs. Right (cf #NolanChart). I like to think of those two dimensions as “#freedom to do what you please with your body” (food, drugs, euthanasia, suicide, sex, read, speech, thought, association, religion) and “freedom to do what you please with your property” (save, invest, buy, sell, donate, build, trade, settle).
This is not a defence of #anarchism or #libertarianism, by the way — I do believe certain restrictions on both kinds of liberties are necessary for any society to function at all.

My only objection: I would boost #Matrix (ie, #Element, #Riot) and fully recommend it, and penalise #Threema and discard it, based on their respective results under the section “are the #app and server completely #opensource?” — I think that’s paramount!
TL;DR: use #Signal (it’s the best and most user-friendly); if not possible for whatever reason, resort to #Matrix apps as 2nd best.

I’ve been on a mission, for a few years now, to read the top twenty or so most important, most influential works of world #literature. Fiction top ten, plus non-fiction top ten. Because the meta-ranking I use as a reference updates regularly with new rankings published and with slight improvements to the algorithm, in going through the list I’m actually getting closer to reading the top forty books.
Each (short) episode would focus on one book: I would share my review, read some passages I highlighted, and my explain why the book is (or isn’t) that important and how it affected me personally.
