Same here!

I care about existential risk, sustainability, the precautionary principle, and risk management.

is attacking a straw man here. Of course any of those concerns can be exaggerated, distorted and politicised.

Know what, Marc? Growth, progress and can _also_ be exaggerated, distorted and politicised.

Any rational agent grabs as much as it's officially conferred on it, and _then more_. An extra inch, or an extra mile: as much as it can get away with.

Sovereign states display that behaviour to the extreme: they are massive in size, extremely hard to scrutinise, and have the best mechanisms for built in by design (eg, for the sake of national security).

Think what you want about the likes of , and — they have repeatedly demonstrated that routinely abuse their powers.

To argue that isn't dangerous because it's just the provision for automatic scanning under special circumstances, for specific cases — and not an absolute mandate for massive scanning of everyone, all the time — is either naive or disingenuous.

The must follow the [principle of least privilege](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principl).

Don't be fooled by generic promises to “get better at decision-making”.

Decision-making is what we all do, all the time.

There's a much shorter synonym for “decision-making”: “living”.

What hundreds of millions of people have used for millennia to get better at living is: religion, philosophy, science, art (literature, music) and the like.

Nothing new under the sun!

@tripu A bet is a bet, glad the money goes to you before anybody else.

I will prepare a blog post about my rationale, hopefully it will be out before the upcoming financial collapse and somebody actually listens. 😁

In case folks aren't aware, the Internet Archive now has a scholar version with a huge collection of academic work available.

This is to leave a record on the fediverse that @fidel honoured [our :bitcoin: bet](qoto.org/@tripu/11032920685610), as expected, and paid me in when the time came.

I believe he's working on a blog entry to explain his reasons to bet against the in such aggressive terms. I'll boost his post when it's ready, perhaps adding my own commentary.

“My god. The weapon is armed, the countdown has begun, and the only known copy of the override code is stored on this old Nokia 5510 with an empty battery. We’re doomed.”

“Everybody chill the fuck out. I got this. Just gotta crack open the old cable drawer. Here you go.”

“You have a Nokia 5510 charger, but why?! That phone hasn’t been sold in over 20 years!”

“Let’s just say, I always knew this day would come.”

“Wow. Your decision to never throw away cables just saved humanity honey…honey…time to wake up honey…”

This is thoughtful design: Muji apparently released a flashlight that works with any combination of 2 AA and 2 AAA batteries, only more dimly with fewer batteries.

In areas that interest me but where I am mostly ignorant (so many!), usually my main goal is to have the “big picture”. ie, I won't read a book on Austrian economics or a book on Kantianism — I'd rather read a comprehensive overview of the different fields within the area, the key concepts and authors, the timeline of events, and the different schools of thought involved. I prefer to do that first before I zoom in on anything in particular.

Question:

do you know of a good book like what I'm describing (a “mind map”, a “map” of the field)?

I fucking hate trendy coffee shops. I hate room with exposed bricks & utility ducts, and artfully distressed wooden tables, packed with content creators sipping their flat white soy twattacinos, with a daft picture doodled in it by a wanker, and eating avocado on sourdough served in a plant pot, or a repurposed bird bath.
