@jchyip it's funny how even the HuffPost quotations don't match the headline
Other way around. He started this by banning QOTO without cause (And justifying it) across all the servers he hosts. I called him out for lying and abusive practices. Since then a bunch of people stepped forward presenting evidence of his abuse.
He is now retaliating regarding the fact that I called him out.
@brinnbelyea@fosstodon.org Why do they value crypto? Who cares! Fact is they do value it for whatever reason, and there you go.
Why do people value super bowl tickets or VHS recordings of old Seinfeld episodes?
People are weird. But that's just how people are.
@generationX exactly, see how he didn't suggest it?
@StephenRamirez@universeodon.com
The goal of Bitcoin is not to be cheap, just as the goal of a bar of gold is not to be cheap. The goal is to provide value, and when it comes to Bitcoin the value is often expressed by the exchange of energy for Bitcoin.
You're talking about efficiency but missing that the amount of energy that people trade for bitcoin is the direct measure of its value, not a measure of its processing power or anything like that.
Would you consider a gold bar inefficient because it costs a lot of dollars to buy? That would be a silly metric. And same with bitcoin: it's pretty silly to talk about the energy that people are trading for Bitcoin as if that is a measure of the efficiency of Bitcoin.
No, it's not a measure of inefficiency since the point of the currency is not to minimize energy usage. That is simply not a goal of the system.
@katrinakatrinka Well right I never said Congress elects the president.
But Congress does hold the president accountable through things like legal negotiations, budgetary negotiations, and if it comes down to it, impeachment.
And yes, separately, the president is held accountable through the election process, through the EC.
So both avenues are vital to holding the president accountable for the actions of the branch that he is charged with overseeing.
That is how it is meant to work, but it only works if we all recognize those checks on presidential power, and on the power of the executive branch that operates through the president.
@meltedcheese you say there is no such exculpatory evidence, but we can see it with our own eyes, so to say otherwise just comes across as gaslighting.
@brinnbelyea@fosstodon.org I mean you're welcome to criticize people for improving their lots in life, but I would suggest that you at least recognize that they are improving their lots in life.
You can criticize a person for doing what's best for themselves. You can call it selfish if you want, it certainly is.
But so often people overlook that this makes people better off.
@HeavenlyPossum but the reason they are trading energy for bitcoin is because it is the most efficient way they know to get Bitcoin!
It's only wasteful because you don't value it, and that's fine, but they do value it, and therefore it is not wasteful to them.
They're paying for what they value. You might not value it, and that's fine, but there are probably things that you buy that they are I don't value, so we would accuse you of being wasteful by the same metric.
But no, it's your money or whatever, and you trade it for what you value. Same here. They are trading energy for what they value.
I'm not going to accuse you of wasting your money on buying whatever it is you're into. That's your business.
But realize that it's the same thing here. These people value bitcoin same as you value whatever you're into.
@HeavenlyPossum If someone decides that the value is greater than the cost than it is not wasteful.
And that's exactly what happens with Bitcoin.
People invest energy in bitcoin because the value they received from it is greater than the value of the energy, so it's not wasted.
@meltedcheese The problem is that there is so much on the record to debunk the claims of the impeachment and the committee.
Yes, if you just settle into the echo chamber around the committee you might be convinced by it, but so many people have a broader world view and recognize the many ways its deliverables were misleading at best.
Sometimes politicians lie. This is one of those times.
@Stinson_108 I mean, the in person argument went through many ways in which the article is not clear at all.
@plamobot It won't.
Hopefully we will stop giving so much attention to hysterical media accounts that claim otherwise.
At the end of the day, Kagan just isn't very bright.
She was a bad nomination to the Court, and I wish they had appointed someone better.
@HeavenlyPossum exactly! So that highlights that people want bitcoin!
@brinnbelyea@fosstodon.org @josemurilo
@brinnbelyea@fosstodon.org No that's not the argument.
Bitcoin provides value that is greater than the value of the energy that people are trading to get it.
That bitcoin can run on less electricity isn't some sort of excuse but rather it is highlighting how valuable bitcoin is to the people that put skin in the game and trade energy for Bitcoin.
YOU or I might not personally think bitcoin is that valuable, and that's fine, but other people do think it's that valuable, so they do trade for it.
@brinnbelyea@fosstodon.org No that's not the case at all.
It has nothing to do with owning everything on earth. It only has to do with buying energy to trade for something they value.
@HeavenlyPossum but it's not wasted in the sense that the people putting their own resources on the line do so because they value what they get in return.
It's like, people pay a whole lot of money for super bowl tickets. Is that money wasted? I wouldn't say so, because those people value super bowl tickets.
I don't, and that's fine, it's their money to spend the way they want.
Same thing here. People value bitcoin and so they trade their own energy for bitcoin.
Because they value it, regardless of whether you and I might.
I think the most pressing and fundamental problem of the day is that people lack a practically effective means of sorting out questions of fact in the larger world. We can hardly begin to discuss ways of addressing reality if we can't agree what reality even is, after all.
The institutions that have served this role in the past have dropped the ball, so the next best solution is talking to each other, particularly to those who disagree, to sort out conflicting claims.
Unfortunately, far too many actively oppose this, leaving all opposing claims untested. It's very regressive.
So that's my hobby, striving to understanding the arguments of all sides at least because it's interesting to see how mythologies are formed but also because maybe through that process we can all have our beliefs tested.
But if nothing else, social media platforms like this are chances to vent frustrations that on so many issues both sides are obviously wrong ;)
