Big tech lobbying, revolving doors, institutional corruption etc are now happening at a scale that mirrors what big oil, tobacco, finance, defense and other industries have been doing for ages.
You cannot take funding from big tech and just claim "but I am independent" anymore.
@parkermolloy Well one perk is you get to vote in polls on company policy,
So I wonder if you vote against what musk wants, if he de verifies you.

Yeah the press are a pain, they want a photo of a team + names, the issue there is that people can then identify a child from a photo.
Great for family perhaps BUT not so good if there is an estranged member of the family looking to make contact.
An irregular reminder that calling this place "Mastodon" has a bit similar energy as saying "I just sent you a GMail."
"Fediverse" (or "fedi") is a better term.
Mastodon is just one of many software projects that talk to each other to create this multi-instance social network:
https://axbom.com/fediverse/
(kudos to @axbom for this fantastic infographic!)
There are blogs, Reddit-like communities, video instances and many more, all part of fedi.

Over here in the UK we need to seek permission from parents / guardians just to take photos in schools, i run code club etc and again the library need permission from a parent in order to take photos of any minors in the room, same goes for sports clubs etc.
Basic Vim Commands Every Linux User Must Know
I think with the fediverse you don't need to use your name,
so you could have www.stux.net linked to your account here using the provided code and probably be verified that way.
@atomicpoet We really do need to be able to cope with this. Looks like Masto.host is still closed to new users, due to load.
@wchr So do we counter this by telling people what big tech is doing or do we counter this by making the fediverse more appealing to people by promoting the diverse content that is on here and the fact instances don't track users, collect data or do other stuff.
Or perhaps a combination of both.
I tend to find people are so tied in to big tech, they don't care what they are doing.
Tech giants are now spending hundreds of millions to systematically shape policy across the world, including donations and funding to policymakers, civil society orgs, media orgs and academia.
A decade ago, this may not have been clear to everyone. Now it really should be.
@ADDiane This is the nice thing about the Raspberry Pi etc, you get a PCB with components but can choose your own or 3d print a case.

I think there is certainly a need to help people either host their own instance, either via managed hosting (what https://masto.host/ are doing) or helping people find hosting and set up a domain and instance,
But it needs to be affordable for people, perhaps also need to help people develop the skills to do that via teaching, so as companies or at least small businesses take up Mastodom they can find people with a) the skills to host an instance but B) they have the knowledge of the culture here so that can be successful.
Do so by using privacy friendly DNS and other services as in not cloudflare.
Oh. my. god.
Madison Square Garden used facial recognition to identify and stop a mom from attending a Christmas show with her kid because she's an attorney at a firm who is engaged in litigation with them.
This is why it's not enough to just ban government and law enforcement use of #facialrecognition. There are so many ways private companies and even individuals can abuse #biometric #surveillance tech.
#BanFacialRecognition entirely. Yesterday.
Welcome to mastodon, hopefully you will find the sort of content you are looking for.
This is great. Postal delivery vehicles do a relatively small number of miles in a day and then return to a central facility every night. Obvious candidate for electrification https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2022/1220-usps-intends-to-deploy-over-66000-electric-vehicles-by-2028.htm
