🧑‍🔬Women make up 52 % of Europeans but, account only for 2 out of 5 scientists and engineers.

❓Why does this gender gap persist, and what can be done to close it?

@deirdreclunemep talks to young Europeans who have enjoyed science from an early age.

Something very weird is going on here, balloons blow off course, yes, but 4 in a week. What are the conditions like over the pacific, that would account for this. If they are truly being blown off course.

POTUS and the government need to be honest and straight with people, otherwise all kinds of conspiracy theories will take over certain social media channels and without a decent source of factual information, to counter this, people will just speculate more.

A fourth Chinese balloon has been shot down. This time over Lake Huron. If that piece of shit, sweatshop built gas bag hit my cottage, it's going to get personal.

(I mean, it's probably a combination of the non-binary experience, the immigrant experience, and the mixed race experience. It makes sense that would influence my writing. Write what you know and all of that, amiright?)

@mekkaokereke @mongoose

Not to mention the toxic influence of social media which is also damaging to people, esp younger minds.

@mongoose I went to school in the UK when I was young. Racism in the modern UK is very different, and not near the scale of systemic efficiency and brutality as in the US. As a result, Black people in the UK live ~23% longer than Black folk in the USA. Black folk in the UK live longer than white folk in the US 🤷🏿‍♂️.

But I am very worried for the UK, as the US is exporting some of our most racist political consultants to advise your politicians, with predictably disastrous results for everyone.

Banning TikTok isn’t just on the Republican agenda.

Democrats want in on the action too.

Senate Majority Leader is in favour of a TikTok ban. He cites Chinese ownership of the service as a factor.

American politicians’ approach to TikTok is following the same playbook as the Huawei ban. And that had bigger geopolitical consequences!

There’s no question a TikTok ban is likely.

So would this be a good or bad thing, seems there are good things on TikTok, but there are (as with any service) bad things too.

Or is this more about privacy.and china having alleged access to US data.

Among the most notorious movies with tortured productions (aside from "Bordello Of Blood") is "The Island Of Dr Moreau".

Talk about how NEVER to make a movie. Our guest on this episode - ROSS EMERY - was the director of photography on that movie-making nightmare. Like Gil and I, Ross has been at the mercy of iconic film director John Frankenheimer.

Ross also worked (a number of times) for actual movie monster HARVEY WEINSTEIN. He has some fascinating insights!!!

Don’t forget: The GOP’s nonsensical culture war is meant to distract you from corporate corruption, worker oppression, and staggering wealth inequality.

#WritingWonders Day 12: are there any themes that pop up a lot in your writing?

Oh yes! 🙂

- The corrosive effect of religion and how the powerful use it to divide us.
- The way that wealth is used as a marker of human value.
- Racism spread through rumour and lies.
- Love between all genders, races, and in some cases: species 🤔
- How the smallest of us can make the biggest changes if we work together.
- The human capacity to destroy both themselves and the planet.
- Gallows humour. 🤣

Physicist John Tyndall is often credited with discovering the greenhouse effect, which he wrote about in 1859.

But female scientist Eunice Foote published a paper - 3 years earlier - demonstrating how atmospheric water vapor & CO2 affected solar heating. She theorized that heat trapping gases in Earth’s atmosphere warm its #climate.

Tyndall was widely read. And Foote, being a woman, wasn't even permitted to present her own work. climate.gov/news-features/feat #history #science #ClimateChange

not accepting MRs from people who vote in government elections. If you participate in a system of organized violence, I don't want or need your code.

@Swede1952

They look like turnstones, common here in the UK at least, so look very similar.

Snowy Egret.

A couple weeks ago, I posted a photograph of this egret flying and about halfway up to this utility platform at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge. In this photo, the egret is just coming to rest on the platform. It's quite a beautiful bird, isn't it?

"Among the most elegant of the herons, the slender Snowy Egret sets off immaculate white plumage with black legs and brilliant yellow feet. Those feet seem to play a role in stirring up or herding small aquatic animals as the egret forages. Breeding Snowy Egrets grow filmy, curving plumes that once fetched astronomical prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species. Early conservationists rallied to protect egrets by the early twentieth century, and this species is once again a common sight in shallow coastal wetlands." - allaboutbirds.org

I think either way, who ever wins, Patrick Mahomes is going to go down in history as someone very special, one of the greatest ever quaterbacks, he has a long career ahead of him (Hopefully).

If there was only one of an item left, store staff would take it from a Black customer and give it to a white one. Black customers were sometimes charged more for the same item. Shopping under Jim Crow sucked.

And Black clerks did this to Black customers too. This wasn't just "I as a clerk am racist against you individually." This was individual employees operating in a racist system of shopping.
