The amazing New Lanark World Heritage Site. This historic mill complex and village was built from 1785 in a previously inaccessible gorge of the River Clyde, a mile south-west of Lanark. The cotton mills here operated until 1968. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/lanark/newlanark/index.html

Months ago, I proposed a short article about #cellulosic #ethanol. Well ... here's a 4,000 cover story words about renewed hope for ethanol as an intermediate for #low-carbon #chemicals and fuels! https://cen.acs.org/business/specialty-chemicals/ethanol-fuel-low-carbon-future/101/i6 #sustainability
Scientists link pollution to high blood pressure in teens.
Long-term exposure to particle pollution may be associated with higher blood pressure in teens, a survey of London-based adolescents has found.
While all age groups showed increased blood pressure in response to fine particle (PM 2.5) pollution, the effects were particularly strong in teenage girls.

If I upload a picture that has text, there is a facility to scan the image for text, it didn't work last time I tried it. So in most cases can type small amounts of text manually.
Perhaps there could be a way to embed or append image metadata with the actual text of the image, then mastodon could be able to pick that up.
There are tools for stenography so it is possible to do that.
Folks, it’s encouraging to see more of you writing alternative text on images here so people who use screen readers can also take part but please make sure the text really is the equivalent of the image.
So, for example, if you’re posting a screenshot of some text, don’t just say “Excerpt of article” or “A tweet by so-and-so” but actually copy/paste the text from it (many platforms let you do this with images these days).
Folks who use screen readers have the right to hear what we see.
"Given the fast-growing complexity of our digital lives, we are facing with high probability and inside of a few years the dystopia of a single company inserting itself as the broker for all of our transactions with third parties. As a community, we need to become systematic and unforgiving in hardening our architectures against capture and we need to do it proactively rather than reactively."

Do current scientific norms & practices act as a barrier to climate action? @anneurai & I believe so!
In a new paper, we argue that a rethink of attitudes & practices is needed to enable academics to address 21st Century challenges - particularly the climate crisis.

A 🧵... (my first attempt at a mastodon thread, bear with me!)
Interesting piece on companies bringing bringing #microbiome analysis into the clinic for their predictive value in cancer #immunotherapy. But take it with this major boulder of salt:
“I think that it’s certainly worth doing,” says Steven Salzberg, computational biologist at Johns Hopkins. “But you have to be really skeptical of what you find.” Before they become widely adopted, the field needs validation, replication and large gold standard trials.'
@zleap The bird on the left is a sandering and a turnstone is on the right. They’re probably common where I took the photo, as well. I live about 140 kilometers North of the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a bit of a novelty for me. 🙂
@zleap This is mostly about geopolitical conflict with China.
Either way, this shows just how much Big Social is vulnerable to the whims of politicians.
Fully agree Can the smugglers be easily hauled in to the hague on charges of traffiking and punished harsly so it sends a clear message to others and hopefully deters the criminal traffinking of people.
More than 90% of people who arrive in the EU irregularly turn to smugglers to facilitate part of their journey.
We want to enhance EU cooperation to defeat criminal networks.
It's time to protect the lives of refugees.

⚠️The EU faces a severe lack of #WomenInSTEM careers, resulting in lower economic independence for women and slower economic growth.
🇪🇺Time to use EU funds and programmes to support female participation in this sector effectively.
