I know this is not a solution per se, what happens if you log in to the website, follow the hashtags. Does the app still follow properly?

@GossiTheDog

Which of course is the last thing a school wants as it needs to safeguard its students from harm and comply with data protection laws, once the data (depending on what the data is) is out there in the public domain then others can take advantage of that.

@seldo

I get the impression a lot of people don't understand computers or networking very well, Or perhaps they are told it is complex so they are less confident understanding it.

It is about how we explain things, one way would be to say imagine you can post to Twitter and get a reply from Facebook, or vice versa, now expand that to posting to youtube and replying from twitter all of this happens seemlessly.

@GossiTheDog
What schools lack in money, they possibly make up for in data, imagine getting hold of the details of 1000s of students, past and present, those people are potential targets for fraud, fake calls from your bank etc.

It seems these gangs work together, so one will get the data, sell that data to another gang who then make the calls to say your bank has been compromised.

@jpkmensah

I know there is a push to get more girls to study computer science, at Code Club I have a mix of boys and girls. I just run a club, so don't do anything special or different. Attendees just work on what they are working on.

What I find frustrating is the lack of help, I tried to contact a company I met at a jobn fair to invite them to a STEM group (that I also run) to talk about opportunities or what they do as a training company, I got no reply.

So if industry wants people it really does need to support grass roots. People at the grass roots level are doing their best, but could do with support. I feel more confident with Sciences than coding.

How can we encourage more girls to take up STEM generally and as coding is a big part of that.

Girls are interested, just a case of reaching out to them and letting them know about contests such as , so they have space to code, collaborate etc.

What part can the Fediverse play in this. ?

Just to clarify, I’m not going to #FOSDEM, I’m going to #OFFDEM.

I don’t attend, speak at, or legitimise so-called “free software” (or “human rights”, etc.) conferences that let surveillance capitalists like Google launder their reputations by sponsoring them. I’m only taking part in OFFDEM, which was created in reaction to FOSDEM’s lack of principles and ethical backbone.

Or a list of those that are open and transparent, so we have those as a preferred option to join the list you HAVE to meet strict criteria, to be removed from the list can be just as easy,

Slack trying to hide their security disclosure? LastPass pulled the same thing recently, but even more blatantly.

We need a searchable index of companies who hide their disclosures like this. It would be extremely valuable when doing vendor assessments.

#Twitter may lose its #SafeHarbor protection because it's not responding to #takedown notices for repeat #copyright infringers.
torrentfreak.com/twitter-hit-w

The article doesn't say so, but it seems that Twitter isn't responding to the takedown notices as US law requires ("expeditiously") because of the #Musk layoffs.

This is big. #SocialMedia platforms cannot operate in the US without a safe harbor from copyright lawsuits. It's as if Musk sawed off the wings of his plane to save weight.

tbh I don't care about quotes, the birdsite feature we should prioritise urgently is the ability to restrict replies, and to be able to do so retroactively; this would legit improve the experience exponentially. #FeatureRequest

Granted it is not perfect, but given what is going on with Twitter, Meta, facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp facing fines for data abuse, if we share some of this, maybe, just maybe people will actually wake up.

Even what is going on with Politics, is proabbly being fuelled, mis reported by the media, people have got to wake up at some point. I don't know much about Fox, other than what is said here on Fedi (and it is not good) so perhaps things will start to change, people must see what is going on in congress as a real frustration and a national embarrassment.

The fediverse is a force for change, even Tim Berners Lee wants, change, @aral is developing small web, so change is coming, just very slowly, which could be a good thing, as it allows more time to adapt and adjust things. 2023 needs to be a year of radical change and it can be.
