:) nice answer.

I have always been fascinated by the Apollo 8 mission. Sure, humanity on the moon is cool, but imaging going there and around… that far… for the first time. What a story!

“We came all this way to explore the moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the earth.”

— William A. Anders, Apollo 8

Apollo 8 (December 21–27, 1968) was the first crewed spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit and the first human spaceflight to reach the Moon. The crew orbited the Moon ten times without landing, and then departed safely back to Earth.[1][2][3] These three astronauts—Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders—were the first humans to witness and photograph the far side of the Moon and an Earthrise.

This being England, it is cloudy, how predictable eh.

Tonight is the first full moon of spring in the northern hemisphere! Pink flowers coming into bloom lend their name to this full moon.

Full moons occur when the Moon is opposite the Sun in its orbit around Earth and its nearside is fully illuminated.

He may get sued by his victims for some of that money then.

@zleap It's not an either or situation, you can do both. Just like with #JustStopOil or #BLM actions can be taken on many fronts: through political activism, education efforts and destroying monuments.

The situation is further complicated in Poland due to the role Church played during the communist era and current political considerations (like the abortion ban and the upcoming elections in the fall).

Even if you're a hardened scientist, I found this magazine absolutely brilliant and informative. Typically available free of charge via your (UK) local library periodicals app; contact them for details.

We can't forget that the Cahholic Church covered up child abuse, but were they also complicit in the holocaust in some way.

Rather than desecrating monuments, efforts would surely be far better focussed on creating resources to help educate through meaningful discussion the legacy of historical figures such as John Paul II but both the positive and negative, and how those legacies are bringing about change.

@libscie

I'll watch the videos later, one of the implications of decentralised social networks for science will hopefully be that it opens up sharing of research to a wider group of people, esp marginalised groups.

There have been a number of posts here about for example the disproportionate of black scientists getting funding, or papers published, so we know there is a issue.

To me, the ethnicity of a paper author is not really relevant, I can read papers or articles (or at least try to) I am interested in the content, so how much science is being lost due to predudice in the process.

I am not part of this process, I just try and read interesting science papers or articles that cover subjects I am interested in, even if I only pick out small parts I actually fully understand.

I would guess what they sell in Currys is more the home use edition, but yeah but the old saying of First impressions,

GREAT NEWS: Twisted Sister lead singer Dee Snider has granted permission for the use of his song "We're Not Gonna Take It" for gun control promotional purposes.

In response to a tweet from a fan on Twitter, Snider's viral quote tweet reply noted that he is a gun owner but "Assault weapons were never meant for anything but combat!"

There have already been more than 130 mass shootings in the United States in 2023, more than one per day.

Drop a💙if you support Dee Snider granting permission and agree that more artists should do so.

For many people, reproductive rights feel like a non-issue because they would never think about having an abortion. But even if you are actively trying to expand your family, abortion bans passed by Republican-dominated legislatures across the country could affect you and your family.

That is because the reach of these invasive, oppressive laws goes far beyond abortion. We explore why that is today in The Big Picture: thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p

@DeanObeidallah

We have not got to those yet, we need to get this hush money to a porn star sorted first.

Don't forget Trump also ripped up the START treaty for nuclear weapons that was signed by Gorbachev and Reagan in the 80s

@shoq @msnbc

I really hope this does NOT kick off in to a full scale riot. There are people on fedi, who probably live / work in the NY area who could get caught up in any problems.

Please keep safe

@SecurityWriter

I tend to use duckduckgo for search and use fedi for social network so very few ads, we have windows 10 at the library I tried to look for an image to use for a project on openclipart.org and the site is totally borked due to ads, which I don't get here at home.

Visited PC world / currys the other day, Windows 11 seems to have some side bar thingy with ads, news links and other garbage, no idea what that is for, so that is enough to put me off windows 11 for a start.

Thank fully Debian has better support for non-free hardware, so any new PC will have the Windows malware removed in full and replaced with a proper Operating system as in GNU / Linux at the core.
