I'm so thankful for the #fediverse

I never thought @pixelfed would take off, and you guys made it happen ❤️

I'm very happy to see so many of my colleagues in #journalism making the jump to Mastodon and the fediverse. Our industry has been at the mercy of Facebook, Google, and Twitter, all of which benefited from the work of journalists without paying them or their publications. The fediverse starts to undo that.
More importantly: every single journalist I know has been targeted for online harassment because of their work. Twitter and Facebook profited from those attacks just as much as they did from those journalists' stories. Meanwhile, most publications still do not take online harassment seriously, even as their employees are threatened on a daily basis.
There are still bad actors on the fediverse, but the individual moderation tools and the tireless work of the community and admins make this a far better place.
And most importantly, no company is profiting from weaponized hatred on the fediverse.

There's no doubt that most people online don't like #ads being pushed down their throat. I would also assume that some (most?) of them still believe that there's nothing they can do about it; they throw their hands up in the air and tell themselves that they're so used to ad banners at this point that they hardly even notice them, you know like an notch on a smartphone.

Seriously though, fedi was *built* by furries, trans and queer folk, disabled neurodivergent people.

This is *the reason* the culture here is what it is. Why CWs are a thing. Why image descriptions are a thing. Why privacy matters here. Why moderation tools not only exist, but are usable — and used.

If you had joined and asked yourself "wow, how come this place is so chill and kinda… nice?" — that's thanks to all the nice people from communities some people call "weird".

The German Data Commissioner is advocating that all public bodies should leave Facebook (and presumably Twitter) and use open platforms instead.

Various German bodies and authorities have already created their own Mastodon servers, as have many EU agencies and the Commission.

Now that the fediverse is expanding it's time for an updated #introduction

In my day job I work on open-source software to model groundwater at Deltares.

In my free time I contribute to @gnome. Most of my recent work goes into writing the book for the Rust bindings of GTK 4 at https://gtk-rs.org/gtk4-rs/stable/latest/book/

If you look at the roadmap for our next major ESR (#Thunderbird Supernova, version 115), you'll notice our goal to complete most features is Q4 2022.

That's because we're entering "feature-freeze" by the end of 2022, and then spending several months on polish and refinement.

This should also mean a longer beta-testing period (and yep, we're working hard on official stable and beta #Flatpak channels).
