Perhaps this decentralised model to moderation (which is sort of what Reddit has) that Mastodon and friends have turns out to be solution.
New job posting: Tricorder Apps (NUX (New User Experience)) Lead Workflow Process Analyst in Navigation Systems Group, at University of Copernicus. #StarTrek #Starfleet
If everyone's doing #introductions - I'm Alex, I'm a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Mental Health at @YorkPsychology in the UK. I am interested in using #cognitive (neuroscience) approaches to understand mental health, particularly #eatingdisorders and #anxiety. I'm very keen on computational modelling and a bit of a methods geek, and I care a lot about the culture of science/labs/academia.
Yesterday forgot to say #Introduction
I have spent a lifetime writing and teaching about #nature and the human spirit.
I've got six nonfiction books behind me, including a national award-winning #biography of #SigurdOlson, a major figure in environmentalism and a beloved nature writer. Now, though, I've turned to #fiction and love it. And now I need an agent....

I little bit prouder today of my institution. MIT is hosting its own #mastodon server
mastodon.mit.edu
See you there soon
Tip 1: Use hashtags. There's no algorithm to suggest followers or shove posts into your feed in the hopes you follow someone.
Tip 2: Boost (re-post) toots liberally. *You* are the algorithm.
Tip 3: Use CW (content warnings / content wrappers) to discuss politics, the meta.
Tip 4: To create "threads", make the first post public and each reply "unlisted" to prevent clogging up your instance's feed.
Tip 5: Provide text descriptions, even just basic ones, when attaching photos or media.
Tip 6: Use the "report" features for moderating trolls so your admins can take action.
One of the things I used to use Twitter for was to help me get my thought-processes in order when writing research papers. There's something about the process of explaining research that's really helpful for writing-up that research. I'm finding Mastodon even more useful for that process. Perhaps because posts can be longer, & perhaps because the community here seems more hospitable to nerdy academics.
If there's anybody out there running a large (*) Mastodon server and needs help/advice scaling, hit me up and I'll help if I can. Please contact on Twitter or LinkedIn as well as here. I'm not confident in my notification settings. Feel free to RT (I guess that's reToot) for reach.
(*) I.e. if you're just struggling to get one running for you and your buddies, that's not what I mean. But if you're suffering from thousands of new users driving up load, I might be able to help. I've dealt with one or two scaling issues in my time...
Loving that #Defaidodon gets so much traction, glad to have found a social media that caters to my #agriculture passion. As each day goes on #mastodon grows on me more and more
Holy hell the twitter exodus is **still** accelerating. The influx of new users is up about 33% from yesterday, our biggest day so far. We are now seeing over 1,300 new users every day on QOTO!
@bestforbritain @zleap It's fair enough, we are still on Twitter, but it's ever becoming a right wing hell hole!!
Let me start by saying that I don't have the answers.
"No-one looks like me" is sadly a legitimate issue & doesn't only apply to job opps but also to people 'in nature'. This needs to change (& is) through movements like #MuslimHikers #FlockTogether #Black2Nature & others - often using social media
to organise.
The notion that access to nature is in any way not for absolutely everyone is, IMO, what needs to be dispelled. The challenge then is to facilitate this access
All,
I've gotten a small team together and we have started development on the Mastodon server for the disability community.
I am in the process of outlining some additional roles we will need to fill to make this succeed, and will put out a solicitation for that at a later date.
I am also making an outline for the information database we want to build, and will likely recruit people (or solicit information) for various pieces of it.

What's with the welcome pineapple?
Back when Mastodon first started, there was a trend of giving a pineapple as a token of welcome. According to Dictionary.com, the pineapple emoji represents hospitality, among other things.
https://www.dictionary.com/e/emoji/pineapple-emoji/
I think it would be nice to resurrect this tradition. If you've received a pineapple in the past or have been around here for a bit, please consider giving a pineapple to welcome any new members you see and show that we're a nice group here.
The collapse of Twitter is a system breakdown. Mastodon and the fediverse represent something different: _system change_. From for-profit "Big Tech" to nonprofit, open source, community-owned public spaces.
System change is always harder than you think. It always incurs short-term costs, with hoped for long-term benefits.
The next few weeks will be really tough for the fediverse. Stick around, vibe with it, and you just might help us put a huge part of the web back in community hands. <3
Opinion: Normalize calling #Mastodon a social *network* instead of social media.
(I'm not sure when we as a society switched over to calling platforms like this "social media" but let's take it back!)
