A fascinating piece on a recent BBC science hour podcast described a study on why people vote the way they do. The result was unsurprising to anyone with an understanding of human biology. Social approval by a peer group is more important than evidence for most voters. If someone one's church all votes MAGA, that person is more likely to vote with them. We are highly tribal social animals, and what our tribe does is very important to many of us.

Long thread short: a lawyer presented court documents created with #ChatGPT filled with nonexistent sources. But go read the whole thing, because it's amazing.
#LLMs are not search engines. They are not databases. They produce plausible text but they only get facts right by accident. We absolutely need good education in what these tools can and cannot do, but the companies themselves are to blame for training users into using them in exactly the wrong way.

Twitter has abandoned the EU's code of practice on disinformation, Thierry Breton said late Friday, but Europe's internal markets commissioner insisted that "obligations remain" for the social networking giant.
"You can run but you can’t hide," Breton said, after confirming that the platform owned by Elon Musk had left the bloc’s disinformation code, which other major social media platforms have pledged to support.
