Which of the following logical fallacies do you find most frustrating to hear used?
@freemo kinda hard to pick between that last 3 haha... the last 2 especially. IMO 1.1 can easily be forgiven and corrected.
@twotwenty YEa I mostly agree. Thing with "Fallacy of Accent" is if its done intentionally or not. A person can say one thing, and argue for hours and once backed into a corner and know they are wrong claim they meant something entierly different, presuming their original statement is ambiguous enough. When it is used intentionally to flip your story it can be be quite annoying.
@freemo All of them, because I don't even know what they are. :P
@freemo
I went with ad baculum, because coercion isn't an argument. There are four lights.
@Parienve I find the more subtle forms of ad baculum to be the most insidious. Yea the whole "Your an idiot ill kill you" if you dont agree with someone makes it impossible to take them seriously. But thankfully its so absurd I dont even consider it here.
The worse form of it goes something like this:
"I support providing therapy for people with inappropriate sexual urges so they dont act on it."
them: "Oh so you are a pedophile sympathizer, I'm sure you are real popular with the ladies"
Basically implying that the whole of society will hate you for your viewpoint, as if how much you are liked somehow effects what the truth is.
@freemo
Agreed. I've seen such forms used to bully people out of what may have otherwise been good-faith discussions.
@Parienve It is sadly all too common. It is a particularly common tactic in extreme conservative and liberal circles where public opinion seems to be of high importance, as well as following witht he majority. Questioning the stance of either group, even as a member will get you a lot of ire.
@djatropine444 There certainly are... In the USA they make up a vanishingly small percentage, but they do exist in very small numbers on either side.
Thankfully outside of the USA such people are far more common.
@djatropine444 agreed entierly. The issue is in the USA that mentality is just far too common on both sides.
@djatropine444 My family has a close history with politicians and have given a lot of money to them. Trump was over my family home for dinner and his kids spent the night back when he was fund raising. Biden also was over for dinner back when he was fund raising.
So yea I can atest these guys invest a lot of time, even with a single person, trying to convince them they arent slime balls so they can get a few 100k
@djatropine444 I have no idea if you are rich honestly. I'm also not sure if Trump is rich, I dont get to see his checkbook nor does my family. For a rich person he does an awful lot of begging for chump change though, so take that for what you will.
But yea your right that they are generally very different people behind the scenes than on TV. Its all for the cameras mostly.
I will 100% support that wrestling match.
@djatropine444 They cant, by virtue of their followers, agree on liking anything, no matter how much they want to. So I am certain at least one of them would absolutely hate it :)
@djatropine444 I wouldnt say they enjoy national ddebt exact. More like they couldnt give a flying fuck about national debt, or national anything. They have absolutely no interest in fixing problems. They care if they are elected, and if their party wins seats. Nothing more, nothing less.
@djatropine444 I agree, the issue isnt with the politicans, politicians and their behaviors is merely the symptom. The problem is with the american voter for sure.
@freemo None of those. The most frustrating IMO is the argumentum ad verecundiam.
@mc yes that one is particularly painful. I find it is often closely related to
Argumentum ad baculum in the sense that it implies if you dont agree with the authority (which is usually a majority held position of a democratic government) then you willb e unpopular with most people.
Not at all the same but they have a similar vibe sometimes.
@freemo Tough call, I went with tu quoque because it seems most prevalent, but that could just be because it annoys me
