He posts this, but still no mention of our situation or any attempt to have a conversation on it... shameful.. seems he looks after his own ass, his own server, but really dont give a rats ass about when it hurts other instances.

There were two notable moderation incidents on mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the past 24 hours that I would like to address. In the first,...

@quantumsensing The long and short of it is that we take a stance where the safety of the lives of our LGBTQ community is our top priority. We implemented feature (subscribe) and federation policies that allow our LGBTQ to safely monitor bad-actor accounts for doxxing and calls to violence without exposing their identities. This allows them to disseminate this information to their community to keep themselves safe... Gargron felt this was a bad look for his empire as it exposes new users to the fact that there are bad people on his network at all. As such he removed us from their official directory and refuses to engage in a conversation about it.

@freemo i think it's a combination of german leftwing being very much anti free speech combined with fears about risking support from the german government which also hates free speech - mastodon gGmbH is a tax exempt company after all ;)

We no longer reference free speech in our ToC partly for that reason.

@bonifartius

@freemo i'm not exactly happy with that change tbh, but i can understand your reasons for it :)

i think that it's a slippery slope to replace "free speech" because from my experience the people who are against free speech are never satisfied.

if anything, don't let this whole thing affect your health, it clearly isn't worth it :blobcathug: !

@bonifartius Functionally its not a change at all.. We just say "Academic Freedom" instead, which honestly is a better descriptor anyway.

I agree it is a shame we had to do it, but it doesnt really change anything.

@freemo for me it feels just wrong that qoto is bullied into doing these things while it always was a nice place with nice people who discuss things in a civil way. maybe with opposing ideas but not in bad faith.

@freemo @bonifartius "free speech" does not not imply others (including other servers admins) to listen to it and tolerate it on their instances. one can speak/write whatever he wants, nobody can prevent him from this. but he does not have a right to make others to listen/read what he says/writes. this is simple and no one is ought anything to the others. every server has its right and it's up to the admin of the server. there's no problem with this. admin can ban some other servers if he got tired deleting inapropriate posts/spam/flood/porn/ads/etc from them. and I understand admins very well because I administrate many servers for years myself and combating different shit in content is a bothersome task. sometimes it's easier to ban the whole domain to stop the flood. and admins set up rules for their servers. they pay for servers and maintain them. so this is absolutely normal they have their views on what should be on their servers and what should not. different admins may not agree about some points. this is also normal. but this is not a drama, this just helps avoiding senseless holywars like on birdsite. people can choose the server they like and that's it.

@freemo BTW is your server still being “delisted”? I can see it here:

@gwr Yes its still delisted.. the official directory is joinmastodon.org

@freemo Will it matter if you don’t want lots of new users migrating? In other words: what are the wider repercussions?

@gwr Shouldnt matter too much for us if we dont want any new users coming in... Problem is you tend to slowly loose users over time and without an influx of new users that means eventually a server will die.

@freemo I understand exponential decay for user base () but isn’t complying to Mastodon Server Covenant all it takes? Where do “we” deviate?
joinmastodon.org/covenant

@gwr That should be all it takes, but it isnt, and we dont... He took us off for some made up reason that isnt in the covenant and the reason makes no sense because it was known when we were added to the list in the first place.

Long story short, he removed us because a nazi started a hate campaign against us by creating fake accounts and spreading lies and that nazi won because eugene caved to that for no reason other than popular demand.

@freemo TL;DR What can we do to help getting this instance listed again?

@gwr e-mail hello@joinmastodon.org and/or tag @Gargron and talk to him. He is the only person who has a say.

For the record here are the screenshots of the nazi who started this hate campaign that ultimately snowballed into this int he first place:

@freemo @Gargron

Thanks! Let me rephrase this: @Gargron is kind of a “central authority” (careful choice of wording here…) in a federated network? 😳

@gwr

He is the CEO and founder of Mastodon, he also controls the joinmastodon.org directory at his whims.
