so because Im fairly new on this instance I thought I`ll finally write an toot.

Your daily reminder that in almost all aspects of technology (and probably life as well) the answer to any question is not one of the fanatical "die on this hill" extremes, but a boring and unenlightening "it depends".

Some guy was saying some quite disgusting anti-trans stuff on facebook. I called him a moron, and he tried to shame me for name calling. This was my response:

> As I have said countless times, I will always call people the names that they are.. dont want to be called a moron, dont be a moron. As someone who insists on only addressing people by their genitals I figured you would be in full support of such a concept. I guess its not so great when people label you in a way you dont want to be labeled huh?

maybe that's the depressing answer to the Fermi Paradox:

The kind of energy storage needed to travel the stars is so high that every civilization that attempts is eventually has a Bad Accident that Chicxulubs their whole species.

It wanted to federate, there would be an outcry to federate. But it explored federation and the fediverse, protested strongly against it, so now they can do what they want while avoiding the scrutiny from the fediverse. They played it brilliantly. As the 800 lbs gorilla they’re away of how everyone would react to them.

"We need to rebuild the . When industries are polluting the atmosphere or the oceans, they are, in fact, the commons ("considering a good as their private trash"). When an industry receives millions in then make a patent, that industry is privatising the common. When Google is putting the Linux kernel in a phone that cannot be modified easily, Google is privatising the common. Why do we need expensive electric cars? Because the industry has been on a century-long mission to kill public transport or the sole idea of going on foot, to destroy the commons.

We need to defend our commons."

Very, very much on point, @ploum !

@johncarlosbaez It's funny because, of course, as a theoretical physicist I took a fair amount of math, including graduate courses in the math department, but not one of them even mentioned the existence of Category Theory. I only ever heard about it from random folks I talked to online.

To me it mostly seemed like a curiosity, a different way to formalize mathematics (rather than the set-based approach I was used to), sort of like using an algebraic axiomatization of probability theory rather than the traditional set-based Kolmagorov approach. Of course, I guess even that leads to interesting things like being able to define non-commutative probability theory, so I probably should have known that Category Theory could lead useful places. Seeing that you seem to consider it so important definitely has made me think I must be missing a really useful tool.

Hab mal wieder gehört, dass u.a.
