@barefootstache hey, wasn't sure where to send this, so apologies if this isn't the place... but does qoto.org not support the elk.zone client? elk is (was) my go-to desktop client for mastodon, but now that i've switched to this instance i can't log in to it. (either says "Can't connect" on the domain autofill UI, or "ERROR: TypeError: Failed to fetch" after. doesn't happen with any of my other instance tester accounts!
@freemo @khird @trinsec @barefootstache oh really? @elk is probably the client i've heard folks talk about and talk about using most! prob even more than @ivory and @IceCubesApp
@freemo @khird @trinsec @barefootstache ahh, i prefer less features to be honest (at least visually.) i like my interfaces clean and lean :) same with twitter — i couldnt use it without something like the "minimal twitter" extension.
Fair enough... thats one reason you can turn on/off advanced mode. Some features unique to QOTO are just functionally super useful.. like being able to follow the feed of a specific server, or being able to subscribe to accounts instead of follow them.
@freemo
Wouldn't this kind of be solved with having an actual simple UI? One that's intentionally not utilizing every feature here just to keep things minimalistic?
Yea, i mean we have simple mode, but I suspect it could be simpler. I would have to review.
@freemo
I'm not talking simple mode (which I use, by the way), I'm talking actual simple theme.
@trinsec @sabbatical @khird @barefootstache
I will write the simplest UI known to man.. it will just have a single button, no feeds, no text box.. it will be labeled "scream into the void".. when you press it it posts a single toot that just contains "AHHHHHHHHHHHH!", no replies will be shown :)
@freemo Is that why you sometimes don't respond to toots? 😋
@trinsec @sabbatical @khird @barefootstache
AHHHHHHHHHH!
@freemo @trinsec @khird @barefootstache hah, i mean, i'm not an extremist on either end — i wouldnt want to live in an empty box OR with clutter. maybe a theme could work? am trying some but not keen on any so far. (and a couple seemed sorta broken?) didnt see any actually dark (or at least grey instead of blue) dark themes as well.
@sabbatical Mm, I use the Mastodon Default Theme (dark) myself. Granted, I also throw a bit of the Dark Reader browser plugin over it to have it that little more dark pizzazz that I'm very happy with.
Mm, see screenie.
@trinsec @freemo @khird @barefootstache ok, thanks. nice to get a glimpse of what you see. the look doesn't appeal to me still (trying dark reader too), but i suppose it's possible i could achieve something i like by writing some CSS into stylish if i got motivated.
@trinsec @freemo @khird @barefootstache or maybe i'll just pony up for ivory for mac instead and call it a day. still weird elk doesn't work here though.
@trinsec @freemo @khird @barefootstache appreciate you engaging with me on this!
@sabbatical No problem. We just aren't too experienced with clients in general. 😬
I can install Android clients to figure it out for our users (and I've done so before). But I tend to use the mobile web interface because there are a lot more features on Qoto that aren't covered by the clients.
@trinsec @freemo @khird @barefootstache huh, interesting — what kind of features are you talking about? haven't stumbled on anything new so far myself.
Quite a few, they are listed here: https://qoto.org/about/more
@sabbatical
Subscribe feature, quote toots, bookmarks (before vanilla Mastodon got it), Markdown support, Latex support, special per-toot options..
I think it's easier to check the features in this link ;)

@trinsec @freemo @khird @barefootstache ok, thanks. will check these out! btw, you mentioned installing clients, but elk.zone isn't an app you install — it's an alternate web interface.
@sabbatical Yeah, but to an alternate web interface the same limitations as with clients would be the case. They have to work off the same API I believe.
@sabbatical
You know, if you see a dark theme on another Mastodon instance that you like a lot, maybe you can let @freemo know about it. Who knows maybe it can be installed here if the versions haven't diverged too much.
GreaseMonkey and Stylus are my go to extensions when customizing the UI.
Maybe there might already be a theme under either user's scripts library that applies for your situation.
@sabbatical @khird @trinsec @barefootstache @elk @ivory @IceCubesApp
I cant say I've had a close eye on clients as of late, so that may be true.. I use the standard web client myself because it has and will always give me access to the most features.
