@Surasanji So at a certain age it is necessary to learn Hebrew. Not so much that you could have or understand a conversation. But so that you can read and speak the words on a page aloud, without necessarily knowing what they mean or translate them. ::sigh::

Around the same time, my middle school had all the teachers. So we in 6th grade had to take 5 languages through the year (5-6 weeks of each) Spansh, Latin, German, Russian, and French.

Just enough to make an "informed" decision on what you would like to study for 4 years of HS.

@ultramarine okay, one more funny observation. I make soap. One of the products for coloring it is called ultramarine (which I think is based on mica or some kind of oxides not the gem) but it comes in pretty much all the colors. So you can buy Ultramarine Red, Blue, Lavender, Pink etc.. It just hurts my ears to hear it used like that. Similar to when people refer to all carbonated beverages as "cokes". What kind of coke do you want? I'll take a 7Up. :)

@climagic can't you use sort -u instead of having to pipe the output through uniq?

I grew up mostly in the North East (USA) where so many people were 1st or 2nd generation European immigrants. A common question, definitely not considered rude, was "what are you?" To which people would quickly list of their pedigree "Scots Irish Pennsylvania Dutch German etc..." Everyone had and knew their heritage, and their families all had some remnant of their cultural traditions they practiced in one way or another, especially around holidays.

There is a culture shock about this when one moves to the South of the (USA) where most persons you will come in contact with (at least those of European descent) are some 12th generation and if you ask then "What are you?" You are likely to get a rather insulted look and a response such as "White, can't you tell?"

No judgement, just an interesting observation from my now much older eyes.

I envy people who got to grow up with multiple active languages. I feel I was robbed of 2 languages I should have learned as a child Yiddish and Russian. The only phrase I ever heard clearly in either of them was "Say it in Russian/Yiddish, the children are listening."

@Surasanji @freemo @arteteco @mngrif well mine too, I had to even look it up. Vowels, why can't I have vowels!!!?

@ultramarine hello ultramarine! I have enjoyed having you as one of my alternative birth stones :)

@kezzbracey@linuxrocks.online "Kill them all, and let fdisk sort them out!"

@Surasanji @freemo @arteteco @mngrif I think if you don't say AUnt you should ad a Y (ie) to the end and say antie. Like "Bob's your uncle and Fannie's your auntie!"

@Surasanji @freemo @arteteco @mngrif ant, wasp, they are both hymenoptera, if they want to share names, who am I to tell them not to.

Just had a long spiritual/religious conversation with someone. When it was over, I realized it was the first time I have had it from the secular side of the conversation.

@Surasanji @freemo @arteteco @mngrif "velvet ant" is in fact flightless wasp. But she has ant in her name :)

@freemo @arteteco @Surasanji @mngrif If you can find a queen I assume they are social ants. I don't know if there are a lot of solitary ants, but I guess there could be. The old cow-killer is definitely one, and thank goodness. :)

@Augur Oh, I believe in Anti-Vaxxers they sure do exist and are causing lots of people to die. :(
