@igelsQTs I didn't expect this. That's at least a 357 magnum based on the cylinder size and barrel length. I can't help but see that it's poorly secured with steel cable. The holes in the wall aren't on target and that's not a proper backstop.

@inference I don't know how old you are but it's quite common to feel like that. Try to meet people who have different interests. I don't know if you participate in locksport but I would recommend it if you've never picked locks. I find it relaxing to just mindlessly pick locks. There are so many communities you could become part of. You also talk to a guy who has an FSF endorsed distro installed.

We both don't like Manjaro and that's enough.

@PawelK @h4890 @useless_idiot Lora and parabolic reflectors with the 2.4Ghz WiFi in the feed horn. The Lora coms can be used to align antennas for the WiFi. The distance on that setup is going to be just under 20km I think. It's limited by the transit time but the gain from the two reflectors uses off the shelf hardware without increasing TX power.

The above will make reconfigurable connections with End to End connections. To interrupt that very small beam would be rather difficult because it's designed to filter out interference. Those used satellite dishes are good for it. You can use beams or metal mesh as the reflector to make it even more resistant to interference. The biggest threat is the wind.

About the 3G, I didn't know it still was in use. Any number of used flagship phones with established TWRP and LineageOS ports can be bought for very little money because of the older network. The older flagships are going to be easy to repair too.

@PawelK @h4890 @useless_idiot Oh a bug out shack. Solar panels are full of problems but as long as they are physically protected and can generate more power than is needed in the winter, they should work.

Batteries are going to be a pain in some way or another. I remember reading about the Nickel Iron battery in an Electrochemistry textbook and that they are used in subways with some of them lasting 30 or 40 years of active use.

The tradeoffs are price, energy density and availability. All that can be overlooked if one is serious and needs a battery to last.

About the internet terminals, there are inexpensive and good quality travel routers made in China that can run OpenWRT. The higher end travel routers can run Ubuntu.

I've used a travel router for around 9 years and it's the same one. Connecting to onions in a University lab with the ability to change things up. They are also small so it could be taken apart and it wouldn't be recognized as a router. So many things that it could do.

@inference @thor I like to test devices outside but there's not a way to blend in doing it. God forbid someone sees the wiring again and I have to deal with who they call. I've had to explain to police what I have and they usually just stop me after a few details and looking at it. They tell me to put it away and go elsewhere.

@inference @thor I feel similar but I have a love of extreme sports. I feel that it helps keep me grounded. I don't like regular sports and it's difficult to make friends. I have many interests because there's always something in the computer world that's depressing and sometimes soul crushing.

@inference @thor That feeling when you see a malfunctioning sign and can tell it's Uboot running on a RasPi just from a glance. I love embedded systems. I will do teardowns on equipment that I've bought before even testing it.

I like other things but computer hardware is always enjoyable to inspect. I've offered advice in the past and I wouldn't mind doing it again.

Building custom PCBs seems rather pointless for most things. I would consider it to interface with something I have no other way of connecting to. There's also the case of a board that does things I don't like.

@thor It's completely normal and I just deleted 8 paragraphs to make it easier to understand.

@thendrix Anywhere there's a jug or bar and chain oil that has been opened, there will be oil everywhere.

@thendrix I've made green lumber with a woodmizer at the same place. Too much downed oak to let go to waste.

@thendrix I remember American manufacturing. Some of my tools are American made with American steel. I think I've bought some specialty electronic components that were made in the US.

The grids we have are awful and perhaps it would be better to engineer new grids. I remember having to use suicide cords after shutting off the mains during and after hurricanes. Carbon monoxide poisoning was part of the experience.

What's odd is that the utility companies won't replace the old transformers unless they fail. They do it because it would be expensive and the old transformers were known to last well over 20 years before failure.

The design changed, less cancer and birth defects, and they kinda suck in everything but efficiency and having to deal with pcbs.

@thendrix I don't know why electric chainsaws are so popular. The last chainsaw I was using was a Husqvarna Magnesium block with a 28in bar. I used that and a regular block version. I would swap to the other one when out of gas.

They absolutely rip. I can't say that it's the same savage ripping I've seen a 12v starter do to a steel flywheel. That torque would be uncontrollable.

About the bar and chain oil, use a large plastic container and have the saw on wood over a couple of inches of cheap clay cat litter. Keep purple power or automotive degreaser around with Scott's shop towels. There's no stopping a saw from being an absolute mess.

The 2 strokes are worse because the gas mix will expand and push into the cylinder in the summer. A hydro locked block that has to be drained and the spark plug replaced before it will run again.

@thendrix As much as I hate to say it, the US set itself up for this and it is a lesson that needs to be learned. Some bible thumping senator is always going to be trying to explain away video of him using meth with a male escort. Somehow that is what is given priority.

I can confirm what you said about the transformers. The highest grade is made in Germany and it's priced fairly. A friend of mine works in a supply facility that sells transformers and other electrical grid components.

@js290 @Murray_N @blitzed I don't care about a quote when MREs can keep American Soldiers fighting for 3 days. We have an imperfect diet when viewed from the wrong angle. If you need 6,000 calories a day and approximately 200g of protein, it's not difficult to get. That's what I eat in a day because of weight lifting. I can't eat raw, free range soy beans and raw fish to achieve those numbers. If the calories were all meat based, I wouldn't expect to make it to 40.

Scurvy and Cretinism are rare now compared to whenever this guy is referring to. Type 2 Diabetes is from being a slob in many cases. Obesity is poor self control or perhaps an advantage. Heart disease wouldn't be an issue if most people died before 40.

I see nothing but a person thinking that what they observed was representative of reality and not the survival of the fittest.

@PawelK A larger military that doesn't like a certain neighbor.

@skells That looks like Euler's Method or some Mathematical Model. Those ugly gaps are a good sign as they know it has to be Modeled.

@eionmac Needs of the many vs needs of the few. We don't need to go back to when the economy had to have an IV drip and people dying due to lack of medicine.

I've never been vaccinated and I've had Covid-19 twice. My only long-term effects have been stomach issues. I got the early variants and the second time while disinfecting a hot area to keep infection rates down. I worked in IT.

The irony is that I became symptomatic the evening before I could get vaccinated with the previously unavailable vaccine. It's recommended that I not get vaccinated because it took over a year before I could get infected again.

Do I think people should be more cautious? Absolutely. Am I afraid of long term effects from a virus? No, it's fairly common with viruses and we all die someday.

I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees.

@js290 @Murray_N @blitzed It's not just the food, lifestyle and environment; it's also the gut flora. US soldiers traveling overseas continue to eat bag lunches and drink heavily treated water. They get the shits upon arrival and it is ignored when a soldier sprints to the nearest head.

Is modern food unhealthy? Yeah it probably is but name an alternative when everything has estrogen like compounds in it. We're fucked and we did it to ourselves.
