Now that is a complicated question. But usually the main way its accomplished with what we call antitrust laws. When enforced (and the usa has enforced thrm but not as strongly as it should) they effectively make monopolies illegal.

Of course the other key is keeping corruption in check and money out of politics, which isnlikewise a difficult task to do, but critical to a healthy capitalism

I wish i had a waterproof ereader. If i did i wouod put on my scuba tanks, go sit at the bottom of a pool and read a books for a few hours.

@freemo Panasonic Toughpad FZ-X1 has an IP68 rating so you are good for approximately 3 meters.

Apparently the main lens won't give you 50MP by default. It's 12MP. You have to switch to 50MP mode and lose a lot of functions.

@skyblond Ah yes the modern smartphones and their not exactly true claims.

Hopefully, I'll get more students to tutor about computer science. It feels good to interact with actual humans face-to-face. It also gives me a good reason to take care of myself and stay sober.

@AmpBenzScientist 100%. It's the standard video player on macOS. It's also the built in video and screen capture tool. Windows still has a standard media player, doesn't it? Fun fact: Most web browsers will play H.264 video in a QuickTime .mov container if you rename it to .mp4.

Bow ya figure that makes no sense. Accumulating resources in a vault untouched is the least effecient form, you literally have negative effiency as inflation devalues assets. A person would achieve effiency by investing thrir mo ey wisely and ensuring other people are using those resources to effectively increase the total resources in the market.

You are getting stuck in the fallacy that someone havibg authority (ownership) over those resources means that other people cant use it for their own gains as well which is entierly contrary to the reality. Those resources will be in others hands and used by them in some agreement to use them for mutual gain (investment in others).

As a woman entering the software industry, I wish I could tell you it's female friendly.

It is not. More so than before, but...

I would suggest to any young woman entering it to keep calm and carry on. Do not listen to them. Just continue to carry on your work. Maintain composure.

@thor It's an industry where men get to be passive aggressive, aggressive and hide behind security when they go too far. I showed a small group how easy it was to track people and probably said some things about how it might already be in place.

The response was to protect the women from knowledge and throw me under the bus. It all mostly went away when I was approached and essentially told to not talk about such things. There's a point where accusations are too severe to not look into. It was manipulation and it was intense for a while. It drew the attention of someone higher up and they put a pin in it, personally.

It seems to be an environment that crushes anyone who doesn't go along with the rest. Psychological manipulation is used to try and break people. Don't underestimate anyone. Don't underestimate what level of deception is being used. Just be sharp and remember that silence is a virtue, use it for your own protection.

Never say anything that isn't rehearsed to HR. Don't be afraid to violate rules when it comes to recording private conversations, just never get caught. Remember the noises generated by equipment.

So that's what I have to say about employment in tech. It does make some people seem to go off the deep end. This is already too long, legality and morality are fun related areas.

To any woman or girl who wants to have a career in computers: Logic gates do not care if your genitals point in our out. Some of the people you encounter along the way might, but as for the discipline itself, it is open to anyone with a brain.

@thor Also learn hardware debugging, some assembly, tools of the trade as well as Verilog. They will be useful skills.
