@brody Pretty sure it's their own fork of something. That's why both their forums and their answers sites are borked now. Because they forked them from free software and then never maintained or merged or updated them.

I sense another influx of new users coming to the #fediverse soon. So I really think we should do our part to manage expectations.

If you are coming to #Mastodon for the #Twitter experience, I really have to caution you - a lot of us #mastoadmin don't know how to replicate the level of brokenness you're accustomed to.

If you want, every once in a while we can just turn the server off or something. If more people sign up for the Patreon I might be able to hire a part time troll for shift work.

But by all means, this is the guy who should be allowed to implant chips in human brains.

@brody Every time I go back, I just see endless toxicity within a minute or two. Makes my blood boil and then I close the tab and come back to mastodon and feel a sense of serenity wash over me.

Like, just the difference in general vibe is so crucial.

@gnusuario As I understand it, it's on a custom fork, so it takes a bit of extra time for mainline changes to propagate.

@Nick_Craver They must have detailed profiles for how every game ever made should run on that GPU for that space... wtf

@b0rk @palin They're used sometimes on old embedded hardware, or at least they were back when embedded hardware had more restrictions on space/memory. For color palettes and the like.

It's related to how some programmers will still try to pack 8 booleans into a single byte despite the fact that 8 bytes is nothing to a modern computer.

@b0rk I really doubt it.

I mean, I'm sure we could have standardized it at other sizes, but whatever size we picked would have had to have been a power of two, right? Just due to the nature of binary storage, it makes things way easier.

@lours_jo Of course it's not acceptable.

I'm not sure I had a point besides pointing out the contrast, but if I did, it would be that we need to draw a stronger distinction between behaviour that society finds unacceptable and behaviour that deserves jail time.

Obviously, I wasn't there; I don't know the details of your situation, but from the way you described it, it was just speech. And nobody deserves to be hauled off to jail for some mean words that didn't result in violence.

Then again, as I've learned over the years, the idea that governments shouldn't punish people for mean words is apparently a distinctly American ideal.

@gpowerf Ahhh. I mostly use social media on desktop. I forget most people use it on mobile. I can see why there'd be some extra friction there.

@gpowerf I don't understand this (and you're not the first person I've heard say this). What's so intimidating about writing a brief description of an image?

@lours_jo In America, the police also wouldn't investigate that, but for a different reason: because it's not a crime.

Do people with epilepsy really need that warning on the front of every new AAA video game or do they pretty much get it by now?

Something is very wrong with the 's standby mode. It seems to burn through its entire battery in a day. That's not standby. That's just "on".

Modern deepfake tech would also make the mirror scenes much less pathetically bad.

Watching Quantum Leap for the first time.

The difference in quality between "shot in the 80s" and "shot in the 50s" and "shot with 80s CGI" are very jarring.

It would be fun to do a series like this today but to match the quality of the old stock footage in the historic segments so it all feels more seamless and based in the correct time period.
