The fact that "College Admissions Essay Consultant" is a real job that pays real money is a real indictment of our higher education system.
The experience tiers of #software #developers:
Tier 0: never tried #programming
Tier 1: tried programming, realized it was hard
Tier 2: kept trying programming after realizing it was hard
Tier 3: experienced enough to identify and properly build basic structures
Tier 4: experienced enough to identify and properly build large structures and systems
Tier 5: experienced enough to know when *not* to build large structures and systems
Tier 6: too jaded to be useful anymore; probably a gardener or pilot or something now
Ouch. Somebody's going to get a Streisand Effect wake-up call.
Framed this way, I feel like any team that has had layoffs needs to be very deliberate about not performing heroics to keep things running. Let things fail if they require going above and beyond. Otherwise the floor will be raised and it will no longer be “above and beyond”, just the expectations of your job. https://chaos.social/@mrtazz/111844063360502168
Lightning; flashing/strobing lights
There was some really cool #purple #cloud #lightning last night just after sunset. The most surreal part was that it caused no #thunder. Here's a compilation of some of the cooler strikes I was able to capture with my shitty phone camera:
In hindsight, maybe we shouldn't be accepting shitty phone photos as legitimate proof when they cancel out all of the security features we've spent millions developing for our IDs.
I wuz robbed.
More specifically, I was tricked by a phone-phisher pretending to be from my bank, and he convinced me to hand over my credit-card number, then did $8,000+ worth of fraud with it before I figured out what happened. And *then* he tried to do it again, a week later!

#AI, specifically #GithubCopilot, is an incredible tool for upgrading code.
I fixed an architecture problem that resulted in over 700 warnings related to nullability in C#. I was able to clear all of those warnings properly with the help of AI in just a couple hours. Now my code base is far more robust and better at handling errors elegantly.
Shockingly, when you use a glorified pattern-matching algorithm to deal with a pattern-matching problem, you get good results. Who knew?
My student did his first solo today.
This makes the 3rd student I have been their CFI for their first solo.

Estimates by the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption ‘put electricity supporting Bitcoin mining in 2023 at about 0.2% to 0.9% of global demand for electricity. Based on those estimates, global electricity use in cryptocurrency mining was about the same as total electricity consumption in Greece or Australia, respectively.’ https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=61364 #environment #economics #globalwarming #climatecrisis
