If a bunch of people you follow have their profiles on another server, chances are that the local community is home to others sharing their interests. By entering a subscription to their server, the local newsfeed they receive will be shared in your feed. Over time, you will then be able to pick out others to follow and correspond with.

This is one of the best intellectual discussions I’ve ever seen. It ties together evolution, computer science, construction of morphology by cells independent from genetics, information theory, and more. I thought you might like it. youtu.be/kgMFnfB5E_A

Those of you who are interested in (personal knowledge management) check out @pkm.social. It’s a space for all things with discussions on techniques and technology related to managing the huge amount of information in our lives. If you are a user of , a free software with a wonderful community and plugins for every need, then I suggest you subscribe to or follow @eleanorkonik. She is a brilliant resource for all things . I enjoy learning from the younger people who are of which I am not. Their ideas are fresh and interesting, and their brains are so malleable and squishy. Actually, I don’t know about the last part as I’ve only held brains that were preserved.

In the 20th century, people dreamed that one day machines would do the boring tasks, leaving us more free time to pursue creativity.

In the 21st century someone invented AI art so that machines can do the creativity, leaving us with more “free time” to do boring tasks.

Let me introduce myself! My name is Ilenna Jones, I am a computational neuroscientist with keen interest on how dendrites contribute to a singular neuron's ability to compute functions and learn tasks. I build biophysical models of neurons in and use principles to investigate how models can learn and compute given their biologically realistic constraints.

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

Hey, people (like me) moving to #Mastodon from #Twitter! If you've set up automatic crossposting from Twitter to here, please consider turning it off. I don't think it works well; formatting often looks odd, but also as you can't really engage, because replies don't end up on Twitter. But mainly because I think it's disrespectful to the Mastodon community; almost as if you can't be bothered to engage here. If you've got something to say here, say it *here*. That's my strong suggestion!

I thought I’d start out here with how I arrived. But first, I want to thank @freemo for hosting this instance. I was not really looking to exit the twit as I had trimmed my follows down to some very useful feeds. But, once I noticed Mastodon due the mass exodus in the last weeks, it intrigued me. It sounded like a cross between bbs and the Well; all of which I enjoyed in the past. Once I understood I needed to find an instance, the hunt was on. After looking at many instances, uptimes, user numbers and reading many admins dispositions towards free speech in their instance, I settled on qoto.org. I was happy to see @freemo’s statement on free speech coupled with “but don’t be racist, sexist, hateful, and don’t harass people”. At the same time encouraging users to be adults and block what they don’t want in their feeds and providing directions to block lists for the more sensitive amongst us. Hit all the right buttons for me. I’m looking forward to learning about Mastodon and meeting new people. Oh yeah, and I like the character limits too!

Hi, I have to say I’m thrilled to have found this space! Like many, I found my way here because of all the nonsense going on in that other place. I’m an older guy recently exiting a career of 30 years in and looking for what’s next. I grew up in an engineering family where math, science and self sufficiency mattered. After a long and circuitous route through , , , and , I chose a second career in medicine and . I specialized in pain, , and complaints. I’m a curious and open person by nature and love a friendly conversation. A few interest tags will give you an idea of what is rolling around inside this meat sack.
