Interesting - it's such a different mindset and I'm still wrapping my brain around all the possibilities!

@rdavis
Definitely not barging in! I'm happy to learn new things from those that have information, so thanks for speaking up - it's a process 😆

@mguhlin @edutooters
Welcome to QOTO! I just want to make sure I'm following you because you are contributing great things to the Mastodon universe 😀

I'm still figuring it out here (the learning curve is sure to last awhile I think) - @mguhlin are you also on qoto.org? Do people usually join more than one instance?

I don't know if anyone else gets anxious about phone calls but a little tip I've learned is: if there is a phone call that I don't want to make, before I start dialing the number, I carefully hold the phone in my hand & toss it gently into a lake. I hope this advice helps others.

Excellent post about vocab mapping! Students of all ages make connections to academic language & new-to-them vocab in this hands-on class activity. Includes video of 8th graders participating and a template for making your own vocab cards. Great for & too! brownbagteacher.com/vocabulary

Keeping my tradition of painting octopuses on the bottoms of tables in hotel rooms alive 😀

People grumbling that #Mastodon is slow at the moment... You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you're complaining there's a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mons-Weds. Relax!

Always happy to share what I have - yes, steal away and remix. I'm always interested in how people can improve on things and make them better too!
Here is the one from the beginning of this school year with some newer info - some links specific to my school have been deleted.

I also offer "Digital Self-Care" sessions for Google Drive, Gmail... it's a way for educators to feel better about their own digital space.

@mguhlin @edutooters
This is an example of what I provide to Faculty at the beginning of the school year - this one is outdated but you get the idea.
This gets updated each year based on our subscriptions & resources.

OK @idiosynchrone - Checking the bio and you had me at "exquisite worksheets" and clinched it with "cat support staff"
FOLLOWING

@mguhlin @edutooters
I start with the basics:
1. How to organize Google Classroom
2. How to set up Gmail effectively
3. How to organize and use Google Drive
4. How to use our SIS (Aspen)
5. How to use provided hardware
6. Provide a list of school subscriptions and a list of all their supports
----
Later I can get into more interesting stuff like how to use our subscriptions, Chrome extensions, resources for templates, etc. But it starts with the real simple stuff that gives them control over their own space... physically and digitally.

I love this - what if teachers posted this each week for students? Or... if the students took it over and posted each week for the entire school?
Thinking out loud (that should be a hashtag)...

It’s Wayback Thursday and time for some #History content. I want to highlight a few lesser-known historic sites for my first few Thursday history ...

A few recommendations for life on Mastodon:

1) Follow anyone you think looks potentially interesting; you can always unfollow later, and they may lead you to new people via boosted posts.

2) Boost posts you think are worthy, so others can discover new content.

3) Don't obsess on replicating your Twitter follows on Mastodon; let it be its own experience, and grow it organically. Obvs follow anyone you miss from Twitter, but this isn't a 1:1 replacement; have fun, follow your instincts.
