@Romaq You want to read a very early first draft I have of a solution?

@freemo I just feel it would have been better to have an opt in/opt out selector per user at signup, vs by instance alone. Your instance block x y and z, you can choose to opt into defederation, or opt out by default.@Romaq

@freemo

If you are looking at software solutions, here are some ideas:

- have two federated feeds, one lightly moderated (lightly defederated) and one unmoderated

- provide a way to add reasons/notes when a user blocks/mutes an account, the notes attach to the block so that the user can remember why they blocked (in case they revise their block criteria in the future) or attach the offending toot to the block with notes

- allow users to flag an account to watch rather than mute or block right away (for those cases when bad actors use Chinese water torture techniques, or when you want to give someone a chance before axing them)

- (admin tools) I don't know what's already available to an admin, but maybe a way for the admin to see how many users on the instance block a particular instance or account. If an instance gets 95% blocks from users, then maybe it's time to defed. from that instance

- as others have proposed, a list of suggested block lists by category that new users can choose from

"Two federated feeds" with the complaint already "Mastodon is WAY the hell too complex I'll go back to just doing a private blog thank you very much."

The attached image by @MaeGodHaveMercy explains quite well the problem.

"Flag an account" ... If I go to qoto.org/web/accounts/483267 I see a spot to add a "note" to an account. You mean like that?

Edumakayshun is always a problem. People want to "use" not "learn." We're not trying to do Dwarf Fortress style onramping of new folks here.

@freemo @obi

@Romaq

I don't remember ever seeing that note feature. It doesn't show up when you open a profile in a new tab. I almost always open profile pages in a new tab because I like the way it formats that way.

When you type text into that note feature is that something that is visible to everyone publicly or is it visible to the person whose profile you post it to? Or is it only visible to me?

re complexity... Yeah, that's always a problem in SW development, feature bloat. Sometimes, especially with SW that's been around a while and updated a lot, you can change it in a way that actually makes it easier to use while adding new features, but that usually takes quite a bit of creativity and UI experience.

Of course Fedi has the inherent complexity of the structure itself.

@freemo @obi

@Pat

I made a note on your account. @freemo can hopefully shine more light on this.

@obi

Follow

@Romaq

I didn't see anything come up in notifications or any of the feeds. I didn't notice anything on my profile page or in direct messages.

I scanned the SW documentation at docs.joinmastodon.org and didn't see the feature mentioned there.

I guess I could just use it and use coded language so in case anybody sees it, it won't embarrass anyone.

@freemo @obi

@Pat

Only the person making the note will see it. Qoto feature. Check documentation at qoto.org/about extra features.

@Romaq @freemo

@obi

I text searched that very long page for "note" and manually scanned the new features section and damned if I can find it.

@Romaq @freemo

@Pat @Romaq @freemo shit. Maybe I'm wrong. If so sorry. Will check in a few.

@Pat @Romaq hmm, can't find it either @freemo will have to answer

@obi

I dont use notes but I think i remember seeing it somewhere, i dunno i need to look around too.

@Pat @Romaq

@freemo
What kind of notes we talkin' about?

Your personal notes on each user via their profile page?

@barefootstache @obi @Pat @Romaq

@freemo
Just go to the profile page within the Qoto interface? Should be right above any description.

@barefootstache @obi @Pat @Romaq

@freemo @barefootstache @obi @Pat @Romaq

*Reads up the thread a little*
It's not a Qoto-only feature, by the way. And it is only visible for the one making the note.

@freemo @trinsec @barefootstache @obi @Pat The notes feature really isn't that obvious on the website, I've no idea if it's in all the various apps. I'm confident you only see it on profiles approached from your native instance, not at all if you view the profile from THEIR home instance which is as often the case.

Mastodon

Growing pains.
