For those of you who missed the announcement from the @freemo account just wanted to reiterate it here.
In honor of our new Indian friends we added two new emoji to the server.
Also if anyone has any emoji they want added, even if its just for personal use (like a monogram of your name or a picture of your own face, anything) we can add it. Just send a 50kb or less PNG image to @freemo and it can be added.
ou can migrate who you follow, but not who follows you. They have to choose to follow the new account, which is encouraged through the forwarding placed on your old account.
Usually what users do is they import the list of people they follow then just send an announcement to everyone to encourage you to refollow you at the new account.
@rudimk @Deepsealioness @freemo @QOTO according to https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/10/mastodon-3.0/
You spoke, we listened! Here is the completely revamped account migration system! Easier than ever, and with 3.0 comes the ability to bring your followers with you like magic! Point the old account to the new one, and the new one to the old one, using the new interface, and your followers will be transferred over!
anyone who goes to your old account on M.S would be forwarded to your new account automatically (and it would say on your account that you moved to the new location).
You can also import all your followers to your new account. Old posts will remain under your old account but since the account links to your new one this may not be a big deal for you, since you can still access old posts.
@freemo @Deepsealioness @QOTO As far as mastodon.social goes, some instances and users silence it due to sometimes defective/very slow moderation (see @ArtistMarciaX's recent experience with trolls). It's generally better if we can spread out onto lots of small instances, as it makes moderation easier and makes sure it becomes less centralized (mastodon with everyone on one instance is just Twitter again - centralized! )
@freemo @Deepsealioness @QOTO @ArtistMarciaX also make sure to check which instances the instance blocks - for instance seems like qoto.org doesn't block any, which is be a problem for some people. There are often also focuses for instances: my one is for Libertarian Socialist politics, and QOTO is for STEM fields (according to the about page)
We dont block instances usually but we do have rules in place for what would get an instance blocked, but so far we havent needed to use it.
We do silence a few instances and in those cases we have our reasoning and discussion public.
As a general rule we will federate with any instance that moderates against harassment (if a user is asked to be left alone the server rules ensure they will be).
No, but only because they have largely left us alone. None of our users have had to report gab because gab doesnt interact with our users very often.
We did have a harassment case once but once we discussed it with the moderators at GAB they decided to moderate the account and resolve the issue. As such we didnt have any grounds at the time to take further action as they honored our terms for federation by protecting our users against harassment.
To be honest given their track record I wasnt expecting that outcome. But since none of our users have reported gab or had any incident with them that wasnt resolved we havent yet needed to resort to a ban.
I tend to agree, particularly because it means a higher moderator to user ratio so us mods can actually consider the human aspect behind our decisions.
Also it means smaller servers like #QOTO will respond much quicker to trolls and spam accounts. That means we have a relatively clean local timeline with almost no ads and very little drama.
@Deepsealioness mstdn.io has 😃
@DineshKumar amazing we are Indianising Mastodon 😁
@Deepsealioness Rationalising 🕊
@shirishag75 dunno abt mastodon.social but many instances have much bigger character limit. Maybe look around and consider migrating.
@restioson I have seen instances.social but have found it to be extremly crass in figuring out what is good or bad :( Wish there was a way to do better.
@shirishag75 maybe I or others can help a bit? What are you looking for?
@restioson something like mastadon.social but with perhaps a larger character space, maybe 1000-1500 character limit, because when I'm in a flow of writing or pouring out thoughts, it seems less. Pinning of 4-5 tweets to profile is also good. If there are Indians on the server that is also good. RW is not good, so inditoot.com is NOT where I wanna be. 1/n
@restioson It's probably a long shot but who knows, let me know if you do find something similar. I would want to follow the timeline of mastadon.social if it's possible after I move though, dunno if that feature would be possible or not after moving to another instance. 2/n
@shirishag75 do you mean the local time line of mastodon.social? You would still be able to follow everyone that you currently follow, including people on mastodon.social
@shirishag75 and it's Indian too
@restioson I am on there, seems though that the backend version is 1.1.4 which I dunno is the same as mastadon . Dunno what the differences between the two SM are and dunno if migration is possible between the two instances.
@restioson reading up on the differences here - https://www.reddit.com/r/Mastodon/comments/ccwp1j/mastodon_vs_pleroma_questions/
@restioson seems https://melonmancy.net/~/DielansBlog/finding-your-way-around-the-fediverse is 404 not found :(
@restioson I am trying to figure out how to go from mastadon.social to fsmi.social but there doesn't seem to be a way/bridge between them ? I have downloaded my data archive from https://mastodon.social/settings/export but there doesn't seem to import the same in pleroma, at least not something I could find. @pavi do you see something in fsmi.social where this could be done ?
QOTO: Question Others to Teach Ourselves. A STEM-oriented instance.
No hate, No censorship. Be kind, be respectful
We federate with all servers: we don't block any servers.
