@johnlitt York is a beautiful heritage city. Lots of open mic events if you're into that. The old architecture alone is worth the visit.

@johnlitt I'm currently on a working holiday in UK being an unemployed bum. Doing a course in game dev and programming. Want to work towards front end dev and game dev.

If you say that as a meme I'd laugh. No different from mngrif's meme.

@Absinthe I started Unity module of my course today, with learning the editor's UI being my current priority.

Something like that, where I'm learning a tool, requires me to actually use the tool to learn about it. That means looking at a flashcard of, say, a hotkey shortcut to zoom in scene window, doesn't mean much when I pull out the mobile flashcard in the toilet, or queuing up in Greggs. I gotta actually be there at my laptop and use the zoom tool.

I remembered that the way I learned to play Dwarf Fortress was pretty much playing it alongside the wiki. DF menu itself is also structured like a cheatsheet of hotkeys.

I think scenarios where you're learning a tool, flashcards won't contribute as much, but scenarios where you're learning knowledge are where flashcards shine.

The case for slow reading.

A new promise of being able to speed read over 1000 words a minute while retaining full comprehension swings around every so often. But hang on a second.

Breakfast thought: sometimes cheatsheets are better than flashcards.

I experimented with many speed reading techniques myself and I agree they are all complete bogus. Comprehension actually gives the illusion of speed instead.

One with a background in entrepreneurship can go through 4 Hour Work Week pretty quick, but the same person without classical literature experience will need a whole month to finish something by James Joyce.

On the other hand with the viable methods listed in the article, visual reading is an interesting one - if I can imagine a scene from a book in my head, that section goes by pretty quickly, and at the same time I retain a lot because I turned them into movie scenes in my head.

In the end of the day speed shouldn't be a judgement factor for reading. Comprehension is individual. Everyone will approach different books at different speeds.

Idea from my friend: microSD-to-SATA connector.

Hello everyone !

📢 🔴 URGENT 🔴

An awesome software is dying, because its #developper has not time anymore to care of it.

It's an alternative of Adobe AfterEffect : Natron (natrongithub.github.io/)

Please, can Mastodon community search for a C++ dev, which want to maintain it ? or search for a company which work with free software ? It's very important.

Boost very appreciated

Thanks in advance for your contribution !

It's a constant battle for me rather than a condition with a one-off cure, but the journey of recovery, relapse and recover again does kind of make life interesting.

Anyone need a random bloke to tell you that I care about you and value you as a human being? If so, consider this it, message me if you want the more personalized form.

Love for all!

Hey folks, if you are like myself and mighty confused by Transexuality/Transgender things, I would like to recommend @TranimeGirl 's youtube: youtube.com/channel/UCEtVfj-XF

I am learning a lot here from her point of view and it's all exceedingly interesting to me. She explains things well from the standpoint of a MtF transexual (Correct me if that is incorrect, Tranime)

She seems to have a very common sense approach to things, and I appreciate deeply her forthright manner and opinions.

Whatever my opinion is worth, I am very much enjoying learning from her regarding her condition and how it affects her life.
