#help needed #mastodon #mastohelp

I notice that in the past I created another on @frayoshi@mograph.social which I would like to move to this one.

One : the other account is like 20 minutes newer than this and more over, I'm not actually "moving from" that one, but want just to redirect like if I was moving from there.. Not sure if this is the correct procedure.. I was going to delete it, but then I read that the account handle will no longer be usable and I want to keep my doors open :blob3c:

@frayoshi @frayoshi@mograph.social

Usually I'd say 'use the move feature' since that can be undone easily. But I see that mograph.social seems to be blocking qoto.org, so that won't work.

Best you can do is just put in your profile description that you're active on qoto.org.

oh... that's sad @trinsec ! I wonder why :blobcatneutral:
Great advice, didn't think about it!! :blob3c:

@frayoshi Some instances block other instances if the other instances federate with yet other instances that would break their rules.

It doesn't make much sense because anything we would boost from the rule-breakers wouldn't reach them anyway because they get blocked.

But I see in their blocking reason references to kiwifarms and gab, but they have not been federating in the Fediverse for a while now, so it's an ancient relic from the past.

I tried @trinsec:blobcatmeltcry:

“not gonna discuss this here for the n-th time. We’re not federating with qoto, full stop.”
~ @mauro admin

I can’t believe it @trinsec @freemo , got blocked by the admin of mograph.social for kindly asking to unblock , definitely a nasty place :ablobnervous:
Just sad for those people I wanted to follow that are in there, 1 in particular which is important to me :blob_cry:

@frayoshi @trinsec @freemo I looked at the mograph blocklist and see that QOTO is off-limits because it federates with sites that mograph doesn’t like. Do you know why that matters to them? Are they concerned that discussions involving mograph users would be visible to those other sites?

@DecaturNature

Its either a lack of understanding or intentional misinformation. But its a common trope.

Basically many instances are under the false misconception that if they block a server, and a server they dontn block boosts content from it, then it can be seen by their server (or vice versa)…

The reality is that is false (we have tested it a few times and verified it is untrue)… you can only see a boosted post if you can see the original post. This is clear because boosting doesnt replicate the content, it just links it. Plus like i said we tested it.

@frayoshi @trinsec

@freemo
Actually, I’ve seen there’s a mindset going that if you give a platform to nazis, that you’re enabling them. Basically the ‘if you are not against them, then you are for them’.

Either you block nazis, or you are a nazi. It’s a quite black and white worldview for them.

@DecaturNature @frayoshi

@trinsec @freemo @DecaturNature @frayoshi I mean, you can’t block all the Nazis. It’s impossible. But I have faith you’d actually block kiwi etc if they existed.

@freemo @trinsec @DecaturNature @frayoshi I mean. There’s nothing redeemable about them. They’ve caused widespread violence against trans people. Proven violence. Federating with that kind of instance makes no sense of we are supposed to be protecting LGBTQ+.

@War_Kittens

We did federate with them when they existed, but it was at the explicit request of our LGBTQ community and for their safety, it is important to know why.

Many of the LGBTQ were monitoring accounts there for the purpose of warning their community of calls to violence and doxxing. Other options (like signing up directly on the server) for them would have put them at more risk so they were here with the purpose of safely monitoring while keeping their ip and other information private.

In fact the subscription feature we now have was specifically added to their server for their benefit, so they could follow those accounts without being identified as a follower, further protecting them.

It was discussed on multiple occasions if we could find some alternative and potentially block the servers but for many reasons discussed we decided it was best to keep federation. In the end being able to see bad-actors, and therefore be informed was a far better choice than being blind to their violence and crippling the victims in some vain attempt to spite the bad actors.

@trinsec @DecaturNature @frayoshi

@freemo @trinsec @DecaturNature @frayoshi :blobcatthinking: That’s a very fair reason. It’s a shame no one will understand that. It’s a bigger shame there’s no other way to monitor on Mastodon other than join or federate.

@War_Kittens

Its not that there are no other ways, its more so that the other alternatives all put people at risk or inconvience the victims without much benefit.

For example they could use the builtin RSS feeds, problem is many accounts that are masto based dont have them, and this would also expose their IP addresses… They could also use a VPN but if they forgot to use a VPN even once then again, they are at risk… also none of these methods give access to follower only toots.

In the end there are lots of alternatives but all of them inconvenience or harm the victim and really server no purpose.
