#help needed #mastodon #mastohelp

I notice that in the past I created another on @frayoshi@mograph.social which I would like to move to this one.

One : the other account is like 20 minutes newer than this and more over, I'm not actually "moving from" that one, but want just to redirect like if I was moving from there.. Not sure if this is the correct procedure.. I was going to delete it, but then I read that the account handle will no longer be usable and I want to keep my doors open :blob3c:

@frayoshi @frayoshi@mograph.social

Usually I'd say 'use the move feature' since that can be undone easily. But I see that mograph.social seems to be blocking qoto.org, so that won't work.

Best you can do is just put in your profile description that you're active on qoto.org.

oh... that's sad @trinsec ! I wonder why :blobcatneutral:
Great advice, didn't think about it!! :blob3c:

@frayoshi Some instances block other instances if the other instances federate with yet other instances that would break their rules.

It doesn't make much sense because anything we would boost from the rule-breakers wouldn't reach them anyway because they get blocked.

But I see in their blocking reason references to kiwifarms and gab, but they have not been federating in the Fediverse for a while now, so it's an ancient relic from the past.

@frayoshi No problem, hope your time in the Fediverse network will be nice and smooth. 😊

I tried @trinsec ... :blobcatmeltcry:

_"not gonna discuss this here for the n-th time. We're not federating with qoto, full stop."_
~ @mauro admin

I can't believe it @trinsec @freemo , got blocked by the admin of mograph.social for kindly asking to unblock , definitely a nasty place :ablobnervous:
Just sad for those people I wanted to follow that are in there, 1 in particular which is important to me :blob_cry:

@frayoshi

It takes a special level of toxicity to block someone for politely approaching you and trying to mend fences and address concerns... What are ya gonna do though, my letter to them could not have been more respectful. The way I see when an instance is this level of toxicity its probably best they blocked you.

@trinsec

@frayoshi

I just took a peek at their instance... They have 640 users and a block list so long my finger got a cramp scrolling through it.... good riddance.

@trinsec

@freemo I guess it's one of those cases where they'd rather want a whitelist instead.

@frayoshi

@trinsec

They are free to do as they wish.. i just find it funny people join an instance that can talk to only a handful of other instances and then still claim they joined the fediverse... you didnt, you joined a forumn :)

@frayoshi

@frayoshi
Not much that can be done about it I'm afraid. There are a lot of small instances like that unfortunately. :(

If you want to be able to follow the posts of those few, you can still subscribe to them (but they won't be able to see your comments).

I'm afraid you'll have to discuss with your buddies what to do if you want to be able to interact with them. Maybe one of you two move, maybe both move. I wish you good luck in trying to reconnect with them!

@freemo

@trinsec Your friends are always most welcome at qoto of course, and there are tons of reasonable instances worth joining too.

@frayoshi

Thanks @freemo @trinsec ,
I will stay away from them and suggest them to join :blob3c:

@frayoshi

I can tell you this, with the level of toxicity at that instance you are probably making the right choice.

@trinsec

you see @trinsec I asked this in November and didn't get a reply, so didn't know until now was

@mandaroza We must've missed it. November was crazy busy with so many people joining.

@mandaroza But I think that was already answered before, when I look back?

@trinsec you may be able to see replies that I can't. On my timeline, there is no reply to that Q.

@mandaroza No, that Q itself didn't get a response. But if you look back in the thread, you can see frayoshi talking about mograph.social, right? Qoto is indeed blocked by mograph.social.

@trinsec it was mastodonapp.uk that I was trying to connect with, but they cannot access qoto.org

@mandaroza

Well, that thread was about mograph.social, so we wouldn't have known how to correctly answer your question to begin with. There is always a server blocked by some other server somewhere on the Fediverse.

But if you go to the About page of mastodonapp.uk which you can find here: mastodonapp.uk/about you'll see when you scroll beyond the server rules to 'Moderated Servers', that qoto is indeed blocked by them.
Including the reason they gave. Which, as you can see, is not quite correct as Qoto does not allow for hate speech and is actively moderated.

Sadly, this is something we cannot help with, as our latest attempt to contact admins of other servers that blocked us had quite a big backlash.

Hope this answers your question?

@trinsec Thankyou, the problem is diving into Mastodon is like entering a river with a strong current, you have no idea of where you are, as soon as you are in, you are swept away. I assumed it would be easier to find my way around. Thankyou for the links.

@mandaroza

No problem. The decentralized nature of the Fediverse has its advantages and disadvantages. If you go into the technicalities, the learning curve starts to be a bit steep. For 'just using it', it's alright, until you start to wonder why some friends can't be found. Then, yes, we get into the nastier details of blocking and all that fun stuff.

Sorry. 😓

@frayoshi@qoto.org @trinsec@qoto.org @freemo@qoto.org wow that was rude af. another reason why fedi would be better if everyone was on their own personal instance

@emma

Usually the toxicity/rudeness of an instances admin is directly proportional to the size of their block list. Not even surprised.

Sadly from a technical standpoint there are huge issues with single user instances, particularly at scale.

@trinsec @frayoshi

@freemo @emma @trinsec @frayoshi

Can you explain the technical issues with single user instances? I was contemplating this.

@frayoshi @emma @freemo @bolapara @trinsec this please - I'm trying to even understand the point of a single user instance. Control?

@Biggles

No one can ban you if you run your own server. No one can force you to adhere to their instance wide block list if you are in charge..

The downside is you have no foice as no one federates with you and your federation footprint is dictated by your size as an instance.

@frayoshi @emma @bolapara @trinsec

@trinsec @frayoshi @freemo @emma @bolapara

But - they can ban your server, no? I honestly don't see any difference between "I got banned" and "my single user server got banned".

People are weird.

@Biggles

Yes, but there is a difference.

If your instance admin bans you you loose all your post history, cant transfer to anotther instance and, at least under your old identity, are blocked from ALL servers and all your followers.

On a single user instance when someone or a group of instances block you thenn only those instances block you. You can always just migrate and get a fresh start (perhaps even to a new single user instance) or stay where you are and be blocked only by a subset of the fediverse and continue to operate.

@trinsec @frayoshi @emma @bolapara

@emma @freemo @bolapara @frayoshi @trinsec

Hmm. Ok, makes sense. Control.

Easier to try to be a decent person, but to each his own. :-)

@Biggles

Being a decent person on a tolerant instance is the best solution, yea... probem is there are so many toxic instances you can be a decent person and still loose it all. so pick your instance carefully :)

@emma @bolapara @frayoshi @trinsec

Listen to @freemo @Biggles!

That's the whole reason why this thread exists :ablobderpy:

@frayoshi

I'd be much happier if we all just try and listen to eachother... but if we cant do that, sure, ill settle for everyone listening to me :)

@Biggles

@frayoshi @freemo heh - he's too late with that advice, I already picked his server...

@frayoshi @freemo I'm not complaining - mostly because nothing to complain about, but also because I know what an enormous time/money/energy sink running this instance can be, especially with the refugee influx. Extra unpaid part-time job at best. In case you haven't heard it today, thank you.

@Biggles

Honestly most of that is a nonissue for me. The new people are all a complete joy, serious, we havent had tto ban not one bad actor yet, its extraordinary! the costs are not even noticeable for me (I am very lucky). The only issue tht ever crops up is the toxicity of a few nasty instances... some faux good guys who throw around the nazi label, and some legit bad actors who are wanna be nazis, swastika and all... Luckily the toxic instances are a minority here on the fediverse, but as the admin I deal with them constantly and it is draining.

@frayoshi

@freemo @Biggles @emma @bolapara @frayoshi @trinsec It's more important the admin is a decent person. Especially when it comes to blocking other sites. Some admins seem to block sites as a kind of popularity contest: ”I'm Import, I'm going to kick <insert your favorite evil> out of the fediverse "...

@Biggles@qoto.org @freemo@qoto.org @bolapara@qoto.org @frayoshi@qoto.org @trinsec@qoto.org the person that made this thread literally just got banned off an instance for asking a harmless question about moderation. were they not being a "decent person"? on my own instance if i get blocked i simply move on with my life but this person is going to have to start over somewhere else when they didn't even do anything wrong.

@emma

I think you misread the tread... no one was saying the original poster wasnt being a decent person. we were discussing the merits of a single use instance and why people who arent decent people might gravitate towards one.

@trinsec @Biggles @bolapara @frayoshi

@freemo@qoto.org @trinsec@qoto.org @Biggles@qoto.org @bolapara@qoto.org @frayoshi@qoto.org yea i got that, i just don't think it's reasonable to say that if you are decent you don't benefit from being on your own instance. i mean your instance gets blocked just for federating with other instances so im sure you understand that every person's idea of decent varies

@emma Of course, I dont think anyone was saying that all people on single user instances are decent people... at least I wasnt.

@frayoshi @trinsec @freemo - stange - the twitter-mastodon retweeter at crossposter.masto.donte.com.br has qoto.org on a block list too - i asked the admin why, but got no reply - very odd.

noticed too @cain_rob !
I guess I'm just gonna host the program, maybe an even better solution ^^

@frayoshi sounds cool. was considering same myself. bit of a hassle to setup though i think.

@freemo @frayoshi @trinsec do you know how long it takes/how often it cross posts?

@freemo @frayoshi @trinsec thanks. mine seem slightly delayed at the moment (cross-posted both ways approx 10 mins ago). will it continue cross-posting in the background if one 'logs out' of moa.party, or do i need to be permanently logged into it (using oauth via twitter+qoto logins)?

@cain_rob

Once you configure it to start cross posting, and then close the window, it will cross post forever... I set mine up years ago and its still going and never stopped.

@frayoshi @trinsec

@freemo @frayoshi @trinsec thanks. i clicked the 'log out' button at foot of page, (after changing a couple of configs to use the ). maybe i shouldn't have done that. i'll try again later without logging out.

@freemo @frayoshi @trinsec - aha! my cross-post from twitter has just appeared on my qoto.org timeline (just awaiting the converse cross-post to appear on twitter now...)

@freemo @frayoshi @trinsec - and now my cross-posting to twitter from mastadon qoto.org has appeared on twitter. so took approx 25 mins on this occasion (& seems one can safely 'log out' of moa.party & it does continue cross-posting in the background (as expected)) :)

@freemo @frayoshi @trinsec makes sense. quite a mip-heavy app i shouldn't wonder. thanks for your help :)
