Maybe an unpopular opinion but linking masks so intensely to covid specifically and not larger disease control in general was, and continues to be, a huge mistake. Obviously masking became much more common with the rise of covid in the U.S. and other places, but it's been a known - and used, form of disease prevention elsewhere for 100 years.
Tying masking to covid freaks out the people who are too in denial about covid to actually do anything about it - a wall immediately goes up before an interaction has even happened. It also misses the point that they're useful for other things - it raises the level of diseases in general that are going around. And maybe most importantly, it creates an entire culture of masks as symbols rather than as actually useful tools. When people see masks as a symbol of fear, a reminder of death or a difficult time in their life, or a sign that someone must be sick to be wearing one and so should be avoided, it creates a much more difficult terrain to build solidarity or even just effectively communicate. The practical use case has been replaced with concepts for many people - and that shift has a high body count.
@garyackerman my observation is that they are well aware of that fact and work quite hard to keep the donors demanding one unaware of the other.

YouTube podcast? Nope. Spotify podcast? Not a thing.
I have some bad news for you, the virus will just keep going forever no matter what policies we make.
Do you still keep scented flowers in you pocket to word off the black death? A few people still die from it every year, it has been with us since 1346.Small pox is the only virus ever to have been eradicated.
The difference between birtherism and Biden's age is that his age is mostly a concern to Left leaning independents and democrats. MAGA folks wouldn't vote for Biden no matter his age. Democrats and independents never bought into the birth certificate crap, but 73% of Democrats think Biden is too old to serve second term.

Set aside Biden for a moment.
What should have happened with Feinstein?
What are we doing to make sure Feinstein doesn't happen again?
This is an absolutely valid conversation to be having, and the party that had a sitting senator who needed babysitting to make sure she didn't wander around and say god knows what... definitely has some explaining to do, which they are refusing to do.
This is not a nothingburger.
@GottaLaff @bufalo1973@xarxa.cloud @DrGeraintLLannfrancheta most on-the-nose thing Stewart said was in reference to all Bidens close advisors saying how sharp he is. "Is there film?" Thus hole thing goes away if Biden just gets in front of the camera and acts as sharp as everyone sais he is.
@OkayKay@ottawa.place @Lana If Biden makes it to January 6, 2025 and gets confirmed as the winner of the 2024 election, then I don't care if if lives a day longer. In fact I think it would be great if Harris would bring some of the fire she had in the Senate to the White House. However, if he dies before the election is certified it is a near certainty that Trump will be sworn in on Jan 20 and that is what scares the be-jesus out of me.
Jon Stewart sums up every though and feeling I have about the upcoming election: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpBPm0b9deQ
@danwentzel if Biden makes it to Jan 6, 2025, I will shut up about his age. Until then, if he has a health emergency or the worst happens, we likely end up not with a black woman but an orange shit gibbon, and there might not be another election after that.
Is it just me or has the level of engagement gone down on #Mastodon? Not hugely, but noticeable.
Looking like another nail in the light duty (i.e. passenger cars) #FCEV market. Shell is pulling out. https://insideevs.com/news/708156/shell-closes-california-hydrogen-stations/
@iuculano I I were Biden, I would make sure to be on TV doing interviews about the economic successes of the Inflation Reduction Act, and stable Foreign Policy virtually every day for the next 2 weeks. This is an easy win. All he has to do is show up and talk about what he's accomplished. Maybe jab at the GOP for the border thing a little. Basically look and sound coherent in public. Easy right?
I bet in reality the White House drops the ball again and lets this story keep spiraling out of control and we don't see or here from the president outside of carefully scripted events until the convention.
@KimPerales I agree with the former Obama adviser who wrote that Biden needs to get out in front of this. He should be calling up every sympathetic journalist he knows and offering interviews. The president should be talking candidly to the the American people about what he has done and what he will do if reelected, and in this moment he needs to be doing it live and unscripted.
Oh my God! Oh f*ck! I wake up to this big news and all I can say is f*ck! I went to bed having read something about Philip K Dick Awards (I can't even remember what I read about it!) and I wake up to learn that my book, Where Rivers Go To Die, has been nominated for this and its a big deal to me and all I can day is f*ck! What a way to start the year!
