It's been one month since you-know-who bought you-know-what, so a lot of people are approaching their one month anniversary on Mastodon (and maybe other parts of the Fediverse, but newcomers seem to start out on Masto).

If it's your anniversary I suggest you post with the hashtag #MastoMonth and tell us about your experience.

What do you love? What do you hate? What do you still not understand? Share your story and ask questions!

And... happy #Fediversary!

I hate phones

I'm trying to figure out which phone to buy to replace my old Samsung Galaxy A3 with. Android 8, woefully lacking in storage space, and falling apart. Yeah, definitely needs replacing.

So I've been looking around. Glanced at the S20 FE and A33, both suggested by people I know. Then glanced over at the A53, even debated A52, but either they're too pricy or there's something not quite right in the reviews I've read that makes me hesistant to throw a lot of money at it.

I am still of the opinion that phones shouldn't be expensive. 200-ish euro should be fine enough.

I'm so tempted to just go eff it and buy an A13 4G instead. 175 euro, seems still sane, and the phone is in every aspect an improvement on my old A3 that I've managed to use for almost 5 years now. :P

I really will need to make a decision by tomorrow when it's Cyber Frigging Monday. I am hugely disappointed at the 'discounts' given so far around here.

Good morning! A post just rolled across my fedi-timeline saying not to post about politics on Mastodon, so I'm here to remind you that:

1 "politics" refers to decision-making about how to live together in groups
2 choosing to not participate in political discussion is saying you support the status quo, and is a political stance
3 abstaining from politics because you feel safe from its impacts is a privilege and a choice to abandon your more vulnerable neighbours

I hate how copyright law means "create a playlist of all the songs that a famous session musician played on" is 20 minutes of clicking, while releasing those same songs as an album would require Treaty of Versailles quantities of lawyers, guns, and money

You walk away from the christmas tree for 5 minutes and this happens…

This year I learned Minkowski sums work nicely on convex polygons as well as segments.
Like a simple example, the sum of this triangle and segment is a 3D prism if nonplanar, or a pentagon if coplanar. The pentagon has 5 edges, 2 edges of the triangle, and 2 edges as two sides of the segment (or digon).
A trivial property is the sum of equilateral polygons is a new equilateral one. As well, the "internal sums" define multiple convex dissection of the perimeter polygon.

I have been conned¹ into preaching on [Epiphany 6][2] and I may be forced to pluck out my own eye to get out of it.

Mastodon doesn't have perfect solutions to the moderation challenges that plague all social media platforms ... but at least we don't have ads.

So thankful for Elizabeth Warren and the #CFPB right now. After months of fighting with my bank, I filed a CFPB complaint last week. Today they called and apologized, as apparently the rep could see I tried to resolve this several times. They promised to make things right and do so in writing as a formal response to the complaint. Turns out a watchdog for financial institutions is a good thing.

Observing what some are calling "growing pains" with how Mastodon instances moderate minority voices is reinforcing what free speech advocates like @popehat have preach for years - that it is the ability for minorities to share their perspectives even if that is uncomfortable for the majority which is the most important function of free speech.

I added an extra server to the cloud. This should speed up our services, in particular gitlab and discourse were using up too much cpu, but now they are fine. Those services should run much smoother now.

A new mRNA based vaccine looks like it might be able to protect against all known forms of influenza even given the highly variable nature of the flu virus. 👩‍🔬

I sing in the church choir and listen to music regularly, but I am not a musician. Never the less, I am fascinated with music theory, and 12tone is one of my favs: youtube.com/watch?v=4SEafqmwWd

hi mastodon, I just thought you all should know that I make exceptionally good mac & cheese (it is my grandmother’s recipe and has its roots in southern church basements)

@cwebber well when two servers like each other very much, they open an HTTP socket and start sending JSON blobs back and forth

“Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for thy love’s sake. Amen.”

It is Thanksgiving here in the USA so here is my take on the traditional turkey

A happy Thanksgiving to everyone who celebrates it, and a happy Thursday for everyone else.
