I think that the story of the Eastern Ohio train derailment is not getting the national coverage an even of this magnitude deserves. Ignoring events like this when they occur away from major coastal media centers feeds into the narrative that the country and the media is run by and for "coastal elites" which is not good for the health of our democracy either.

#CollegeBoard's website is so shit that I Googled the CSS Profile codes of 5 colleges in the time it took to give me a list for "New York". Google's out there literally searching millions of web pages and extracting this number, and CollegeBoard can't even do a lookup of like a thousand name to number entries in their database </rant>

Ethical question: Someone I don't know but share a common interest with posted a picture of a very cool delivery he got with the address blocked out but the tracking number clearly visible. Do I tell him that the shipper gives a partial address online and will give a complete address and photo of the delivered package if contacted by email? or is someone else's OpSec none of my business.

On September 25, 1965, 59 year old Satchel Paige pitched for the Kansas City A's against the Boston Red Sox. He pitched 3 innings and only gave up 1 hit - a double to Carl Yastrzemski.

This concluded his career in the American League w an ERA of 3.29 over 476 innings and two All Star selections - all done when he was between 41-59 years old.

My Paraphrase of a Recent Faculty Meeting:

"2023 is going to be a year of INNOVATION for us - by which I mean, we're going to resurrect some programs that we've tried repeatedly over the years but have never worked and which we refuse to alter based on feedback from those who've been through this cycle multiple times. If you resist, it's because you don't care enough about our kids' success to risk being INNOVATIVE!"

US Politics

With today's second set of documents, it is time for to step aside and not seek the presidential nomination in #2024.

He is already a weak candidate with a poor track record when it comes to making significant progress on the economy, the climate crisis, women's health and judiciary reform. He is a very old man and his age alone adds greater risk of becoming unable to campaign at a critical moment. (can you imagine what happens if a 82 year old candidate ends up in the hospital a few weeks before the general election?)

Now we have this political gift to the GOP. Not only does this totally blunt any messaging on the Mar-a-Lago documents, but it will hand around Biden's neck like "her emails"

Maybe for a great candidate with strong popular support it would be worth enduring the political headwinds of this , but Joe Biden is the least popular first term in the age of modern polling. It would be better for the party and the country for him to step aside now and allow for a robust open 20-24 democratic primary.

First CBO score of the new Congress is here.

Says that the GOP IRS funding bill would reduce spending by $71.5B and reduce revenue by $185.8B.

Net deficit increase of $114B.

I'm gonna keep posting this until one of you fucking boosts it

Starting January 1, California now requires that companies with more than 15 employees disclose the pay range for their positions both to job applicants and to current employees. I attended a mandatory training for managers about how to respond. I'm wondering if anyone has put out guidance for employees about how to use this newly available data?

I'm more or less part of the fediverse since 2017, but I still can't get over the fact that you people are describing images, very often making me almost content with not being able to see them at all. I've never seen so many people taking time to write meaningful descriptions on this level anywhere else.

It really, really means a lot! Thank you for making it awesome for everyone! Keep 'em coming! ☺️

Back at work. I'd forgotten how many different way wearing a mask is annoying.

The power went out. I'm isolating because of I have Covid. Can't cook; can't heat the place. No one to play board games with by candlelight and our usual thing of driving to a restaurant that has power probably isn't respectful of community health. 😫

Happy New Years Western Europe and Central Africa.

This is why we need to build more above ground storage folks. That's almost 50,000 acre ft a day we are dumping into the ocean instead of drinking and growing crops. It is enough water wasted each day to supply 150 homes for a full year - every day. All because we don't want to invest in storing more water.
