It occurs to me that people on other instances or using an app might not be able to see the quote toot, here’s the original I’m referencing https://botsin.space/@todayilearned/106862755661216874
I love little tidbits like this. Francis Bellamy was also a socialist. While he was hired to help sell flags to schools, which might seem hypocritical based on his politics, he seems to have also genuinely believed the Pledge would help unite working people of the time under a single banner rather than continuing to divide us based on race or nation of origin.
I'm pretty sure this is how flat earthers and COVID deniers started. It was an absurd joke someone made to make fun of conspiracy theorists. It underestimated the stupidity of these people and became a real thing...
How long before we hear the fediverse filled with people thinking this shit is legit too.

I feel like the various servers in the #fediverse should be more explicit on which other servers they block and why. For example, joinmastodon.org boasts there are over 4M users but it seems like the top 3 servers block maybe 1/4 to 1/2 of that? Granted they're probably blocking what the average person would find to be the most objectionable content.
Just on mastodon.social alone you have to click to the ToS and scroll down to see what's blocked and even then it doesn't really give you the whole picture. It conveys more information than Twitter would ever give you. That's not exactly a high bar though.
Before anyone gets started, I think individual servers should be able to block whatever they want. I'm sure this has come up before too, but I don't see any reason not to continue the conversation. When that many people are silenced a little more transparency could be a good thing.
The degree of cognitive dissonance required to jump from "You can't make me take an unapproved vaccine!" to "I'll take horse de-wormer instead!" is frankly pretty astonishing. Interesting too, in a frightening sort of way.
There’s a huge imbalance in #workdeaths, yes. In my country (🇪🇸 #Spain), last year there were 751 work-related deaths, of which 696 were men (source: last available official report by Ministerio de Trabajo y Economía Social).

@freemo sorry to bother you, I just noticed my QT here is unlisted but not sure why? Is this just default behavior when quoting a bot account or is quoting bots discouraged?
I can't totally discount user error of course but I have my posts set to public by default.
So to me this sounds like some real 1984 type stuff, but I'd love to hear from Canadian fedi users if anyone is willing to share their opinion.
Also, does this have any real support among voters or is it a "think of the children" type thing that's going to be pushed through without any forethought?

If that's not a clickbait title I don't know what is...

🌐 Globally:
Half a century ago, the Left appealed mostly to the poor and uneducated, and the Right to the rich and educated.
Nowadays, supporting leftist parties still correlates with lower income (and supporting the Right with higher income), although that link has weakened.
What’s most interesting is that correlation along the “education” axis has reversed: today, it is mostly educated people supporting the Left, and uneducated people supporting the Right.
Anyone have an idea of how many Tbps this would be? 17.2M requests/sec sounds like a lot, but even on a normal day Cloudflare handles billions of requests before I'm even up for breakfast.
