They found that the Canadian fires released more #carbon in five months than Russia or Japan emitted from fossil fuels in all of 2022 (about 480 million and 291 million metric tons, respectively). The English words '(to) waste', 'vast', and 'to devastate' are all etymologically related.
They come from the Latin adjective 'vāstus' (desolate) and '(dē)vāstāre' (to lay waste).
More distantly, they're related to Spanish 'gastar' (to spend), German 'wüst' (desolate; chaotic), and Dutch 'woestijn' (desert). The infographic shows how.
