Marie Curie's notebooks, which are radioactive and must be stored in a lead-lined box in the Bibliothèque Nationale. Curie’s corpse is also radioactive. Her coffin is lined in an inch of lead. Both will remain radioactive for 1,500+ years.

Gravity-Defying Stoat.

There aren't many of these mustelids on Mull, so I was surprised and amused to see one out in the open, bouncing down the road towards me one day.

It seemed pre-occupied with a piece of bark that had fallen from one of the forestry trucks, and was playing with it for a while, before leaping around manically, and then vanishing into the undergrowth.

In 1925, Dr. Cecilia Payne completed her PhD thesis, described as “the most brilliant ever written in astronomy.” At a time when few #women entered academia, Payne discovered what the universe is made of. Her work began a revolution in astrophysics.

Dr. Payne-Gaposchkin became the 1st female professor & 1st female department chair at Harvard. Given most of us remember names like Darwin & Newton, we should also celebrate Payne. #science #space

Prejudice toots that "fish" for replies so as to accuse people of prejudice.

@empiricism

On: 'The toot image your referring to is obviously racism. For instance, change the "color" from "white" to "black" and......what's the difference?'

I would urge you also to read and consider: ceoln.wordpress.com/2015/11/04

Reversing "black" and "white" (for instance) in a statement, doesn't necessarily preserve any particular property of that statement.

I just learned of several more instances that have removed us from block lists.. Im glad to see so many instance admins are willing to listen to reason and have changed their decisions in light of the facts and evidence. From what I hear it wasnt just my emails but the efforts of so many in the community showing support for us. I really appreciate that from all of you.

@russellpierce

I suspect that depends on the particular linguistic / technical community.

Certainly distributed system programmers will speak / think of a database and a database server as completely different things; each server may host multiple databases, and any given database may be served by multiple servers at different (or the same) time(s).

A database being down and a server being down (for instance) are completely different ideas. The people that are authorized to access a database are likely a different set of people than those authorized to access the server(s) as such, and so on.

Don't know if that helps, or just introduced whole new levels of uncertainty. :)

#ChatGPT is trending on #Mastodon. I had heard of it, but I didn't know how good it was until I started digging into it.

And here are the related HashTags and the influencers who are talking about it.

To mark the 125th anniversary of the #Battle of #Austerlitz (Slavkov) (1805-1930) & the 110th anniversary of the death of #Napoleon (1821-1931), the town created a special exposition with catalogue (112 pp. 4o).

The cover design with Napoleonic eagle in French colors is by V. Pečinka. The text includes photos as well as 2 full-page color landscape woodcuts by artist & educator Jaroslav Dobrovolský, whom the #Nazis would murder in1942 in #KZ #Mauthausen for resistance activities during #WWII

Come sail your ships around me
And burn your bridges down
We make a little history, baby
Every time you come around

@dietrich I'm not sure, again, exactly what your point is. You seem angry at someone, but I don't know if I can offer any help, really.

The fact that you've had violence directed at you personally is regrettable, but it's not directly related to the fact that millions of Africans were enslaved and their forced labor used to (for instance) build the USA, and then treated unjustly for generations afterward.

No one is asking you personally for reparations, or blaming you personally for that, if that's any help.
